I recently acquired a Lionel 685 Hudson. It cleaned up well and runs great but I did not work on the smoke unit which has a coating from the use of pills.

Can these smoke units be modified into a unit that uses liquid for smoke? Is there a modification instruction available?

If not, can a liquid type smoke unit be retrofitted?

Also, what material and method works best to clean the pill residue? A sticker in the cab of the engine says to clean the area with Lionel lubricant. I tried Labelle lube (oil) and the residue seems to be impervious to it.

If smoke output with liquid seems anemic, best way to clean out the unit is take the top off and make sure the hole between the chamber and the piston is clear. Also if the felt to caked up with residue it may limit air flow. You can burn it off as Jim suggested, (I use a heat gun) or simply replace the felt.
