Lionel "Theme" Train Sets

The only theme set I have is the Lionel remote control Thomas set I bought for my 4 year old grandson. I mistakenly thought he would leave my trains alone if he had his own set, hah! He still wants to run all my trains as well as Thomas.

I am a big fan of sets since they run on my outer loop O27.  So far I have PE, the K Line Girls Set, Halloween Set, Cascade Range Logging, and Rio Grande General.  I love 'em cuz they are toy like which is the main focus of my little 9x10 RR.

Just the PE in scale and non-scale versions. We are building a new Christmas layout with sufficient size so that we can run both versions of the PE on this layout.

To add some 'color' to my PRR by Lionel collection I have added theme sets.

I purchased the Thomas set w/ anna and clarabell for the grandkids

and I run it at shows. the kids love it and watching thomas' eyes go back and

forth.

I also purchased james and the freight set with short bobber caboose. At the time they

discontinued the depressed center falt car with Harold the helicopter.

So I made my own. Bought a MTH flat car and a Harold the helicopter and strapped him down.

We have blowout pricing on the NASCAR and MLB sets on our web site right now.

I have both of O-Gauge Polar Express sets (Conventional and Remote.), and the Thomas Remote set.

After seeing Nassaus Set sale,  your comment is valid.  I only got the Peanuts,

theme set, Well, cauz they are cute. ( still watch the Christmas show, and have it

memorized).   BUT, that is about it for what is on sale,  CP-nope, Area 51- nope,

makes me wonder,  Does Lionel actually know how many of these were produced

and how many are sitting around the country unsold and at a loss.......aka NAscar, and sports Teams,  

Currently I have none. A Christmas set could be in the cards someday.  Not sure if these are 'themed', but if I ever get caught up with regular train and layout purchases, I would love to have the tinplate boys and girls sets that were in the last couple of Lionel Corp. (MTH) tinplate catalogs.  

Forgot Halloween, there may be one of those here someday also.

Many a Christmas, I used to run my powerful work horse 2046 locomotive and tender along with some freight cars and a caboose.

For Christmas of 2007, our daughter and her family bought me the original Lionel "North Pole Central train set," this set then became our Official Christmas train set.

I think there are two types of "Theme Sets":

1.  Ones with some sort of train in the storyline somewhere:

Thomas

PE

Hogwarts

Period ORIENT EXPRESS....(Real train, but A Christi DID place a murder on it!  Actually, she had 3 train based mystery novels.)

2.  And sets that have absolutely no train at all:....

I have a Halloween set, a Polar Express set, a Holly Jolly Trolley, and a Red Sox set.

My wife likes to do a seasonal Halloween display for the kids who trick-or-treat, and a Christmas scene for our Christmas party. The Red Sox set betrays my loyalty and heritage.

I Have the complete line of Lionel Large Scale Thomas.  The Lone Ranger Set and

after my wife saw the sneek peek of the O gauge "Frosty The Snowman" set, I was

told to get one of those.

In general, I dislike sets, especially those with non-railroad "themes." You are not likely to find a NASCAR, MLB, etc. train on my layout anytime soon. The only theme set I ever bought was a Hogwarts Express, which I put under my Christmas tree one year and later gave to my grandniece (the oldest of my assorted nieces and nephews). She liked it, but her brother and two male cousins (all younger) loved it! The Hogwarts is kind of a special case compared to something like a Disney or NASCAR set. 

I like Christmas themed trains.

My first set was the Lionel North Pole Central.

I've added quite a few additional North Pole Central locomotives and cars, and other assorted Christmas themed cars.

My daughter has: 1st run of Lionel G gauge "Thomas", MTH McDonald's, 1st runs of Lionel PE and Hogwart's. They've made for a lot of fun on Christmas mornings over the years (nearly 20 since Thomas, come to think of it).

I just gave away a Lionel BalyHoo circus train set to my nephew this past December.

It was new in the box and never been run. When I opened the box to oil it for Nick I was amazed how nice it was.

I bought it at York about fifteen years ago for about $125.00 dollars. I was going to use it for a circus display plan that fell by the wayside, so when Nick called to ask me about what would be a good buy for his two young boys I gave it to them.

Nicks dad told me that the kids love it.

In any case I also have the Polar Express, Harry Potter, Spong Bob Square Pants and the Norman Rockwell set that I bought for me. The others where bought for my son over the years as he was growing up.

My wife bought the I love toy Train set and it is the only toy train item she keeps in a closet away from the rest of our collection.

I have a Polar Express, PRR Freight with add on passenger cars, and a UP Freight with railsounds.  I bought the trainsounds tender to go with the PE set.
