Beyond the cursory lubrication points pictured in the owners manual for the "Hogwarts"-type 4-6-0 locomotive & its varied versions (Santa's Flyer, Halloween, & Shakespere), is there anything internally that should be lubed every several years?

Its hard to believe there is not a major internal drive gear or two that would requiring some occasional attention.

Also, what about the same for the Berkshire locos found in Lionel's Polar Express, Major League Baseball and similar sets?   Thank you!

Yep, you have to pull the bottom cover and lube the worm gear to complete the job.

Absolutely... on both points. I did the PE 10 years ago with Mobil 1 oil and Lucas Red 'N' Tacky #2 and have not needed to revisit this loco since for maintenance. This is the original small-motored version, as well.

John, I am getting ready to try the Santa's Flyer "lube job" today.  Is the LaBelle #196 "grease with PTFE" I have good for the worm gears on the Harry Potter & the Polar Express-type locos (I have the Phillies version from 2013).    I also have LaBelle #108 oil for the lighter lube points.

Hi D&H 65,

You mentioned "I always make it a point to oil the upper and lower (or front & rear as it may be...) can motor bearings with a needle-point oiler (Labelle has a good one for instance). The motor spins the highest rpm and the bushings need to be re-freshed at some point."

Do you need to pull the shell off to get to those?
