Received mine today ....Nice car !!
I walked in to the Herald Square store yesterday and got one for $41. Interestingly the cost cut was not anywhere to be seen on the shelves and I had not read about it here so I expected full price and was pleasently surprised by the price. Its a nice car.
I was disappointed in their display Windows this year they were no where near as electorate as they have been the past few years. There was no clear narrative carrying over from one to the next and there was very little animation.
I am seeing the sale price of $41 now at Macy's - black Friday price.
They seem to have disappeared from the Macy's web site. Maybe the more attractive Black Friday pricing caused them to run out.

Yep! I ordered one on Thanksgiving. The order went through. And the next day I got a email saying that the item has been discontinued.
Those who ordered through the Macy's app as their first purchase got an additional 25% off of their order. I ordered through the web and got a $10.00 Macy's cash voucher for use on a future purchase. I did end up using the app to buy a couple of parade snowglobes. Other than trains, I'm a sucker for nice discounted snowglobes.
- It appears as they did sell out but I'm not sure why your order would go through and then be cancelled.
Now the question is, will there be another car out before Christmas like last year's?

From Macy's? No. This is the car the retailer planned for 2016. It's no longer available online, but there may be some available in stores. When they're gone, they're gone. Same as always.
It's a lengthy explanation as to why, but I ended up with 3 boxcars at the Black Friday price of $41.99 + tax. Before I return two of them I thought I'd offer them to anyone in the area who may be interested. If any of you would like to come by the Grange display (masterfully engineered by BillP) in Havertown on the weekend someday I'd be happy to sell the extras.
Hagerstown pa?? I'll take one. Where is the display? I'm in springfield.
Less than 30 of them left in Herald Square store if you are buying one in person.

I also ordered on Thanksgiving while watching the parade and I received it last Monday. Nice graphics.
The only hitch was shipping: while processing my order at $41.99 the mobile app reminded me that I was only $8.01 away from free shipping. It seems all orders over $50.00 got free shipping.
So I bought a Dept 56 Snoopy Water Tower to go with my Peanuts Christmas Train.
