I had heard the IR Atlantic was a good match with Marx and smaller Lionel O-27 stuff, but I haven't seen one for myself.

Looks like it's about the same size as a 999? Does it have an electronic reverse or an electro-mechanical E-unit?

they do look like they were made for each other. 

The small digital whistle is in the tender so if using a Marx or ???? tender you lose the whistle capability.

Yes they use an electronic reverse unit. They also smoke fairly well.

You can find them on the Atlas web site. They come in started sets or individually.

I was thinking of the IR from the '80s-'90s? I think they only made rolling stock.

In that era, they made freights, hand cars and trolleys, no loco's.

I still think they made the best log cars for the money in O.

Al Clair who post on the forum bought one of these Atlas IR engines a few years ago from a set breakup I believe. He changed out the trucks on the tender with pre-war lionel so he could run it with a pre-war set of small Lionel passenger cars.

They look like they were made for each other.

it's hard to tell from the picture, but does the boiler have a Belpaire shape or is that just a large turret cover in front of the cab?

Here's a photo of one I have, its a fair model of an E-6 just a bit small for O.

Overland Flyer, The answer is yes is it is a Atlas engine and the boiler is a Belpaire I have had this engine for a number of years and it looks good on the front of a 3/16 train.

thanks, that was my thought.  add a generator behind the headlight, a few pop valves behind the steam dome, paint the cab roof red and you'd have a nice PA inspired locomotive.  the stocky E6 and the closely related G5 ten wheeler are among my favorite small engines.
