I just picked up a beautiful boxed pre war Marx Set. It is number 25000 Streamlined Steam Train. The loco is a 666 with decaled numbers and a NYC tender. The set contains a 3552 B&O Gondola in grey, a 3553 Shell Tank Car in Orange, a 3555 GAEX Box Car and a Reading Caboose. Original track and transformer are all there and everything is EX+. Looking for verification of contents, year made, and some guess-timated values. The tender and caboose have metal couplers where all the cars have plastic so it may be a transition set. All trucks match.

Thanks

The set 25000 is generally a pre 1950's set came with a 999 loco, a NYC wedge tender, a boxcar(roadname varied), a gondola (roadname varied), a 256 NIAX tank car and a Reading caboose. These sets were produced before plastic couplers to my knowledge. The GAEX boxcar and Shell tank car would have come out after that set was produced.

Sounds like you have a nice outfit, but most likely not correct for the box, but then again, we are talking about Marx. Set info is not the best.

Thanks Steve. I'm also assuming that the cars never came boxed within the set box. The three cars with the plastic dovetail couplers have nice boxes. I'll probably pull them out and purchase the correct cars for the set as the box is super nice with all dividers, and the loco and tender are sweet as is the reading caboose which has the metal dovetail couplers. Odd tender with the wedge thing...

I have seen a LOT of #25000 sets, and they do not come with a #666 loco or boxed

freight cars.  Depending on when the set was made, you can encounter #999

engines with four different castings (pilot differences) , two types of drive wheels,  (spoke and Boxpok), and two types of sliding collectors, three part early or one part late. You will see similar sets with different componets but they will have

another number, such as 25225, sometimes overstamped on #25000 on the box lid.  As stated, you CAN encounter abberations, as though the line was running, they were out of box cars, and the foreman threw in a stock car, but those are rare.
