Good morning, rail people!  Wednesday is here again.  The lingering minutes of Summer are fading, and perhaps by the time most of us read this, after 10:14, it will be Autumn.  Every season gives us a changing landscape to capture the railroads in action.

Well, once Railfest at Steamtown ended, a few items still needed to be put away.  The extra day or two of items outside led to some new photo opportunities.  Like the one above, with Nickel Plate Road 759 and Lackawanna F3 664 posed outside the turntable plaza. This was Labor Day morning.

Next up is 759 at closing time that same day.  The late afternoon sun on the boiler jacket gave it a bluish tint.

The Lackawanna trio of F3A 663 and F7B 664 sitting outside the locomotive shop awaiting repairs and F3A664 catching a few rays gave the shop area a late 1940s look.  The plan is to have 663 return to active duty paired with 664 this October.

Track improvements are taking place in the Steamtown yard, most notable in these views of some new switches being installed as well as tie replacement along the way.

These should also be complete by October, and we hope they will eliminate some of the slow going we have put up with the past few years.

What has passed by your camera lately?  You know we would like to see.  Thanks for following along, and have a great Fall!

Attending Sunday's Giants game afforded me the opportunity to grab a few shots of the NJ Transit station at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The spur branches off the Pascack Valley Line and is operated on event days only. Opened in 2009, ridership is healthy with an estimated 10,000 fans riding the trains on game days.

As seen in the top picture, the station is immediately adjacent to MetLife Stadium. A train powered by a dual mode ALP-45DP is at the platform:

I was lucky enough to tag along on a road trip through South Dakota, Wyoming and into Billings.  We stopped in Sheridan Wyo and I took these of the big Northern stationed there.  At least I believe it is a northern.  These things are just huge up close.  The drive is really special this time of year in Wyo and Montana.  Not many trees but what there are were turning a really bright yellow.  Just think to run one of these beasts in this scenic area would have been a real privilege for some of us.  Of course there were the bosses to deal with but still. 20160918_152849[1]20160918_152943[1]20160918_152953[1]

On Sunday, 9/18/16, my path to my parent's home was crossed by the Hagerstown turn of the Winchester & Western RR. I was able to spot the train down a long tangent on these x-Pennsy rails, turn around and get back to the US11 crossing in Halfway,MD.
A nice surprise was GP-9 459 on the point, this 1955 vintage EMD was originally Nickel Plate Road. It was followed by 2 GP-38-2s and a decent string of varied freight cars. The train is moving less than 15mph here, W&W will connect with NS at their Vardo yard in about 2 miles. After exchanging cars, the train will return south to the terminus near Inwood,WV.

I will have to take the camera to downtown Wilkes-Barre to take some pics of the work being done at the CNJ station. A private owner/developer bought the entire block from Luzerne County at a substantial loss to the county. All the passenger cars and other rolling stock that were once part of the Station Nightclub Complex as it was called, have been removed. It's a shame that nothing was saved for possible restoration. One of the passenger cars was used to transport minors from the Scranton area to mines nearby. One of our preservation society members asked if I would be interested in restoring it if we could acquire it. It's now gone to the landfill. Last I saw, only trucks and other metal parts were laying around. The station is slated for full restoration, so this project may be the subject of frequent visits.

I can not believe that no one has posted any photos from the CVSR Steam in the Valley event on this thread yet. Here are two of my favorites from the Saturday trip. NKP 765(767) truly is a beautiful locomotive. My special thanks to those responsible for making the event happen. My 100 year old grandfather was able to join us for the trip. He is a former railroad employee working for the B&LE after WWII.
