Has anyone used one of these kits before? Can I cut off 5 of the lead ins and keep the original size illuminated with no dead spots?

Hello Roger. I don't have that particular Miller kit, and I'm sure Miller would promptly respond if you asked, but I'm almost certain the answer is yes.
The extra contact pairs allow you to cut off sections to make smaller panels. As long as you have one contact pair remaining, the entire panel illuminates. As shown below on a scrap piece of blue EL panel (not Miller), I don't even use the provided contact pair but scratched off the insulation to the 2 layers and clipped on. Hope this helps...

I do have the Miller kit; bought for a Harley-Davidson sign project; another project that I have not quite gotten to yet!
I quizzed Chris about it at the time, and yes, you can make quite a few small signes, or one large one. Any size segment of the panel that still has connectors attached can be used.
