Tried to stop by the store and it was closed during open hours. I checked the store site when we intended to drive over from Illinois, but that didn't help.

Isn't there some way to make a timely announcement on a web page for those of us that are clever enough to check before we drive over?

This kind of relates to those websites that don't update inventory as well. I had three cancellations last week by stores that don't update (apparently) their on line inventory.

That situation is epidemic. Most don't seem to have the resources, or just take the time, to keep their website inventory up-to-date. Very frustrating for on-line customers. One extreme example: A year ago, I called on an item that had been on the webpage of a hobby store, only to be told it had been sold quite a while ago. A year later, it is still posted on their site.

It's not the way it always is. Some websites are pretty good at keeping their sites updated, unless they get down to the last one of an item. Then they have to go to the back and check, usually.

You are quite right; a good inventory system works off of a two computer system. One in the front of the house and one in the back. As inventory arrives . It is scanned by a barcode type scanner gun into the back computer.

That should update the main computer as well as the website. It's not terribly expensive and inventory only needs to be entered once.

As an item goes out it is also scanned and deducted from inventory. It's not rocket science as the software does most of the work. Supply chain management software will handle inventory, generate supplier and customer orders and update your website all at the same time.

It's always easier to "cut slack" for people that we like.  Retailers have a dilemma these days concerning web sites.  We expect everyone to have a web site, but for many they are merely trying to comply with that requirement but do not wish to invest the time and resources to properly maintain it.

 

So, should a retailer have a bare bones web site with minimum information such as location, hours open, how to contact and forget trying to have inventory information?  Or just forget it and not have a web site?
