7DA44939-CC34-4397-A294-E6D2CB7E29EEBorn and raised in Missouri and living for years just feet from a Missouri Pacific branch line I often asked myself why I never Modeled the MoPac. My Grandpa and Great Uncle worked in the car shops in DeSoto Mo in the late 1940s and 50s. My Great Uncle retired from there in the early 1970s. I’m about to start a O scale Missouri Pacific project soon but would like to see what kinda Missouri Pacific stuff you have. You can post anything Missouri Pacific Memorabilia, Engines, Rolling Stock, Cabooses, Trucks, Trailers, Piggybacks (real and model), Buildings, Tracks, Trestles, Warehouses anything that has to do with the MoPac. So let’s see them. I’ll kick us off with a Weaver Boxcar I got several years ago.

Nice custom caboose. Thanks for posting. Is that Indian Creek outside of Potosi, Mo. I use to haul ore out of the mines near Indian Creek on hwy 185.

Thank you!

No, the North Indian Creek here is one of tributaries of the White River, now partly underneath the waters of Table Rock Lake.  There is an extensive backstory to my layout founded in my own personal and family history in addition to my serious interest in the Ozarks and their history.

I do have an interest in the old Lead Belt area, too, actually, and a previous layout of mine was meant to represent the Iron Mountain.  I am in the midst of a project kitbashing an ex-Iron Mountain 4-8-0--well, it has lain fallow for over a year now for various reasons, but I *will* finish it someday.

Lee - always willing to help but I don't have much in the way of MP rolling stock or loco's.  Here are some pictures... I apologize after all these beautiful "scale" pictures, but Marx makes up a lot of my collection and so that is what I can share.

Here is a local switch job, caboose hop.

Marx MoPac Switcher - side view

Here is an actual Marx set (except that the Marx truck is my add, the original had two tractors) and it was called..."The Eagle"

MoPac Eagle Switch Job [2)

I do have a MoPac Cattle car that is reasonably realistic, but I don't have a picture at the moment.  I will make one and post it later.

Best Wishes

As a fellow St. Louis area guy, I was trying to place those first pictures posed by lewrail.  The one I include above looks to be just south of the St. Louis Union Station.  You can see the "Y" track structure that leads into the train shed in the top right quadrant of the picture.

Below I took a screen shot of a Google streetview on S. 18th street.  You can see the red brick building that was in the center of the "Y" is still there.  You can also see a hint of the top of the train shed, and the clock tower of the majestic Union Station in the background.

Thanks for your comment Lee.  The photo I took of the Baldwin Baby Face is pretty rare. I think the MoPac had only 2 3 unit sets of those brutes.  Anyone interested in my other MP photos can find them in lewrail.rrpicturearchives.net. Let me double check and see if the link works. Lew

Lewis, you have a wonderful collection of photos on your site you list above.  I just starting looking through them, thanks for sharing!

The mention of the lead mining area of Missouri might be of interest here. My Dad's older brother died of a rail road incident at Herculaneum, MO., in Nov. 1915. His foot was caught in a frog and the train passed over him. Here is a history of that area which includes mention of the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Railway, which eventually became part of MoPac.

Fantasy or not, those are just beautiful!!

Well my offerings for MoPac are very humble indeed, but I will post them here just for the fun of seeing them with all your beautiful scale items.

Here is the Marx #54099  MoPac operating cattle car from 1956-57.  There is a mechanical trip under the car which when activated opens the door and pushes a cow partially out the exit.

Not to steal the thread but this N&W / MoPac car has had me puzzled. Looks like an N&W car, right? But look closely at the upper right and the second picture. For the MoPac experts, what was the relationship between N&W and MoPac for moving refrigerated items? Or is this an imaginary car?

BTW, the K-Line box calls it:

I am not an expert, but I will try to address the question. American Refrigerator Transit was a long time joint venture between the Wabash and Missouri Pacific railroads. A some point in the nineteen-sixties the Wabash was merged into the Norfolk & Western. This car represents the post merger period with N&W acting as as a successor to Wabash under the agreement. Hence the reason for N&W signage on this car.  Models of the ART cars usually have Wabash markings rather than N&W.  Pat B.

Love the Mop. It's one of my "Foundational Four" (+1) that I used to guide my "Kansas City & Gulf" freelanced theme.

The Mop's blue and gray was classic. I really like the way some of the blue/gray engines weathered. I also liked the Jenks Blue. LOVED the way it faded/weathered so fast.

(I like weathering.)

Wow! Totally forgot about this thread until it got bumped back up onto the radar!

I see I missed some replies/question, so let me make like frog and hop to it...

jacobpaul81:

Concerning my comment about my "Foundational Four" railroads I used to guide my decisions about my proto/free lanced "Kansas City & Gulf" theme, you asked this:

"MoPac, Frisco, ATSF and UP?"

You got half of it right!

Actually, it was four lines that were regional to the area I have lived in since moving from KC MO in January of '69: The Arklahoma region of western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Specifically, the Ozark and Ouachita mountains that lays over the AR/OK border. (I've lived in the eastern OK portion since May of '90.)

Those lines are: The Frisco, the Missouri Pacific, the Rock Island, and the Kansas City Southern.

I also take a look at how the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (the "Katy") did things, for they run along side my region, too. However, the "Foundataional Four" are the ones that determine "go-no go" on whether I incorporate an idea into my KC&G theme.

Pat B said:

As I said, I loved the way the blue and gray of the Mop weathered. (The Jenks Blue scheme did, too.)

With the Mop being part of my "Foundational Four" that I use to guide my decisions concerning my proto/free lanced HO scale KC&G theme, I chose colors that are very close to what the Mop used for their blue and gray scheme. However, I did lighten the blue and the gray to better suit typical layout lighting. Also, my paint schemes reflect the Mop (hood units) as we as the Frisco (cab units).

Here's a pic of tatty KC&G #255 idling alongside the small engine house at the mountain town of Ozarka, Arkansas. Does the paint scheme and colors remind you of the Mop? That was intentional!

Horrors!  I have two C&S cabooses, that l found trucks on a Mullet River side door had zinkpested, so l had to replace, but found l have no known MP cabooses (unless one of side doors l accumulated over years out of junk boxes) is a model of one.  Did Mullet River offer any MP kits?  Haven't seen an O MP brass caboose ...there is that once common Hallmark related T&P brass side door, but MP?C&S and Burlington used some of same cabooses; any chance T&P and related MP used that same side door?

"When all else fails, read the directions", so l went to the Michels MP caboose book.  Hundreds of cabooses in history of the MP, and its several affiliates. MP had connections in south, the C&El in eastern Illinois, and assorted other subsidiaries. A number of brass HO cabooses are shown, but none of the many side doors, combine cabooses, and drovers of the MP.  The list is so long, with photos of many similar side doors, that l can only guess which one might match the Hallmark T&P O scale version. An MP expert might know.

Palallin, I bought the seven cars offered most recently: the set of 4, the set of 2, and the diner. I missed out on the earlier release of the Sunshine Special RPO and the Missouri Pacific Northern. I also have several Atlas MP and TP express refers that might look good in this train. I am out of town for another two weeks, but have hoped to post photos of that train and perhaps another one or two MP themed trains in this thread. The best I can do at this point to lead this train is a SP Northern 3751 (No Bueno) or a MP Mikado. If I had the MP Northern, I would try to run a second Section with the Mikado. In this thread I maybe able to run an E-6 Texas Eagle, a coal drag, or a mixed freight. But not for two weeks. Pat B.

I'm not sure if they install them on everything but they do install them quite a bit.  Swapping them for some clear plastic would be easy.  It doesn't bother me so I'm keeping them as-is.

Wouldn't change them out if I had that set either, was just thinking our older set has clear windows and wondering how they would look mixed together.

I’ve posted this in the “Midwest Monday” thread - so in case you missed it  - here’s what I call a nice “portrait”.

3rd Rail MP E6 “A” / Run 1

DCCECF33-558C-4FD0-9EC6-A8941AF945C3I believe there were only about 10 of these (3 rail and 2 rail combined) in Run 1, even less “B” units.  3rd Rail E5, 6  Run 2 is currently being executed and hopefully could be finished near end of this year(?). MP is again being done in this paint scheme And Also in Jenks Blue. A side-by-side “family portrait” will be presented then. Great Fun !!!

Cheers 😜

Great thread!  I grew up not far from DeSoto and had friends and relatives that worked at the Mopac car shops.  Years ago I'd chase trains over at Dupo, IL and around the St Louis metro area.  I'm slowly building up an O scale roster for retirement (most of my collection is N scale).  Here are a few pics of some things I have.  A modified Weaver GP38-2, a kit-bashed short bay window caboose, a rural depot in MP trim, and one of my Atlas GP15-1s.
