Got home tonite to find my MTH 30-1477-1 had arrived. Yay! (Quick plug for Brady's Train Outlet bradystrainoutlet.us they are having some issues with their order system but they answered emails promptly) First it is very nice as can be expected. But I bought it because the MTH site said "Freight Yard Sounds". http://mthtrains.com/content/30-1477-1 I already had a passenger engine and I wanted a freight hauler. First off, the label on the box had the right number but it said Passenger Sounds.  And when I ran it, indeed Passenger Sounds.  I can't blame Brady's, so I will call MTH and ask wassup? Presumably I will be able to change it to freight sounds by selecting the appropriate file? And I can use a DCS Commander to accomplish the download? (need to read further into Barry's book)

In fairness the manual on the MTH site says Passenger sounds, but it didn't occur to me to check that far in. Is this something else one needs to look out for with MTH?

Hopefully the PS3 Rail King Mikado I preorded will be as advertised when it gets here.

The premise for the engine, outlined in the MTH blurb was that some of the K-4s were retasked postwar as the diesels took over passenger service. Since the period of my RR is transition era/1950s, I figured it would fit.

Try the soundset from this PRR L1 Mikado.

This past year I purchased the Imperial PRR M1 Mountain that was advertised with freight sounds both in the catalog and box label.  When I got it home and unpacked, I was surprised to hear passenger station sounds (and disappointed to see that this PS3 Imperial still had cast-in marker lights and no truck chains).  It appears that despite what was printed in the catalog/box MTH put passenger sounds in two of the 5 models in the run.

The passenger sounds and related whistle are very good by MTH standards, but I pre-ordered and purchased the Mountain to be a freight loco.  I had to download the soundfile from one of the other M1's in the run to get the freight sounds.

I already grabbed 2 candidate files. Might have a go over the weekend.
