Which MTH Locomotives have batteries in them. Is it only restricted to those with the PS-2 operating system or is it PS-2 and PS-3 as well ?

QSI and PS2 have rechargeable batteries. PS3 uses super capacitors. You can however replace the batteries with super caps that plug right in. There called a BCR.
Dave Z is right on track with one little clarification: MTH locomotives fitted with the QSI control system are labeled 'ProtoSound' or 'PS1', and not QSI. QSI was indeed the manufacturer of these controls but MTH rebranded them as ProtoSound when they used them, and they had several unique-to-MTH features added to them by QSI in the process.

Hi mth ps 1 boards use 8.4-volt battery but you can replace with super cap, ps 2 3-volt and 5-volt use rechargeable battery but you can also use super cap. batteries generally last about 7 or 8 years, but some people would rather use super caps, because they generally last the longest! ps 3 board are already built with super cap!

And it should be noted that you should replace the old white batteries with either a new green battery or a super-cap/BCR, before powering up an old engine. You can damage or even fry older PS1's and 2's if the old battery is left in place.
