2 engines..neither will read cv. DCC sw on,these are 2 rail. Using program track.
Both operate 100% in DCS including MU.

I've been told by the experts at the local O Scale club who use a computer and JMRI Decoderpro to program locos, that MtH did not implement all the DCC CVs according to the NMRA standard.
I have found on most locos with sound, I cannot read CVs on the main, but I can program on the main. I use Digitrax DCC though, not DCS.
It is very common to not be able to read back CVs on sound decoders since the programming circuit in the command station has a very low current limit tolerance and the inrush current created by the large capacitors on the sound decoders is often seen by the command station programming circuit as a short so it cuts power to the programming circuit to protect the command station programming circuitry. Hence you lose the ability to read back CVs. If you plan to do much sound decoder programming, then I would recommend that you pick up one of the programming boosters which are designed to overcome the inrush current issue. You just install it inline with the two wires leading to the programming track (links to programming booster examples below). As stated above, programming on the main is still possible but you just cannot read what you wrote so it is basically "fire and forget".

Thanks for the tips..come to find out both engines were already loaded with long addresses. One starts w f3 and has sounds,direction,throttle etc and the other does not respond to f3 but will throttle and respond to direction only. I will try again next week with above advice.
