My RK Doddlebug 30-2158-1 powers up with 2 clanks and flashing lights and then doesn’t move. I’m using a Z-4000. I replaced the battery with a BCR, and got the same results. I did the program reset using the Z-4000, same results. My buddy gave me this reset kit to try. I read the first line that says it can be used with any engine that gives 3 clanks when powered up. He said use it anyway.

I have two questions; could it damage his chip?

Could it cause more problems with my engine?

Thanks!

Your problem is most likely, just like everyone else who gets two clanks and can't seem to get it out of 'Reset', that your PS1 is very sensitive to which transformer you use to power it, and the throttle sequence you use to apply the power.

This issue has been discussed here on the forum many, many, many, many times.

There's no need to use the reset chip.

Start with an old fashioned transformer that has no electronics in it.  Then, you have two options depending upon whether your PS1 was made in the first year, or later years.

If it's one of the later ones take the throttle up to above half-way in one smooth motion, stop, then drop it down to just below half-way (8 VAC or so), stop, and then push the direction button.  It should start moving forward at that point.

Also, make sure that it has a good battery, i.e., not the white one, or a BCR in place of the white battery.

@Mellow Hudson Mike i hi I wanted to give an update and thank you again. I put the Doodlebug on a track powered by a ZW and I was able to get it going after a couple of tries of applying high power and then pulling it back but not off. After getting a dink I hit the direction button and off it went  forward and reverse. I put it back on the main controlled by the Z-4000 and applied power in the same fashion and was able to run it there as well. Thank again for your expertise!

Hearing the 'dink' is the key.  That means that it's left 'Reset' and is ready to roll by next interrupting the power.

Nice to hear that you were successful.  Good also to hear that your Z-4000 also works as a power source.  Some folks can't get the Z-4000 to work no matter how hard they try (e.g our friend @Buco from down under).

These things are quite finicky and a often times it takes more than a little practice to make them perfect.
