MTH Spine Car Compatibility with 3-Car Twin Stack Cars?

Does anyone out there know whether you can take an MTH 3-car twin stack set -- the cars that have no couplers, just the "stem/hole" connectors -- and connect them to the Premier spine cars? Will the middle of the spine car set accept the twin stack connector set-up? So that you could run, say, a spine car, the three twin stack cars, and the other spine car? Are there differences in connector height or hole diameter etc. that would complicate things?
