MTH Tinplate changing battery

I have an MTH steam engine, a Reading Lines T-1 PS-2, and the battery is in the tender.

Before you replace the battery make sure that it really needs replacing, as it is a labor intense job because the battery is mounted under a circuit board. the tender's shell must be removed and then you can access the battery after removing a few things, might want to make a diagram or take some photos before removing the battery.

My local MTH tech in Miami FL told me that my battery just needs a good 14 hour charge from a wall transformer that MTH sells. He said "don't track charge the battery" as you can have your engine take off at high speed because of power interruptions.

I have replaced the battery in my PS-1 steam engine and it is in the tender also and sort of difficult to get to. PS-1 engines are more prone to circuit board failure when the battery goes bad, so if a PS-1 engine sits for a long time replace the battery with a fresh battery that is fully charged.
