i was 7 when i saw this train and 14 years later i'm still trying to figure out what i saw

i was at All aboard train shop in Manteo NC when it used to be there so i can't go back and ask what they were running in the display in 2001

the train was a consist of 3 coal hoppers and a caboose but the locomotive was what got my attention

it was a big black diesel that looked rough and chiseled looking with a cowled sort of body

it looked to have a 3 or 4 piece windshield

it had no  sound system but it was extremely loud and squeaky

i've googled all types of american diesels for 14 years and haven't seen anything like what i saw

and i've looked at lionel too and found nothing

at one time i thought it to be an sd70ace but there were no ACes back in 2001

The sd70ace wasn't built until 2004 and besides the ace didn't have enough crazy edges and angles as this thing had

i never thought my reward for good behavior would lead to me trying to solve a huge mystery

i've tried saying i just imagined what i saw but i still don't know

i just need help from you guys because i want that train

i want that train more than any other train i've ever wanted

it was almost spikey looking not like a dash 9

it was kind of scary looking

That was my immediate thought too, but that unit definitely has a good (for it's time) sound system.  Maybe it was this unit (Lionel # 6-18226) if the sound was turned off.

The "making a lot of noise" part certainly applies with the 2 vertical Pulmors inside.

The coal hoppers and caboose could have been anything randomly set up with it, since this engine was not part of a set .

A black locomotive in a North Carolina shop would more than likely be a Norfolk Southern locomotive. You didn't specify the scale, so I'll assume that it was possibly HO, or it could have been O.

No matter. Finding either a model or its prototype will suffice.

So rather than having everyone here try to read your mind, do a Google search for "Norfolk Southern diesel" and select Images. Using that broad search, keep looking until you see the diesel that matches your memory. If that search is too broad for you, narrow it down with EMD or GE added to the description or try variations of modern diesel names by adding SD or Dash, etc., until you see the image you want.
