I recently screwed up and won a large lot of track at an auction. I thought it was going to be a smallish quantity of all Lionel  O Gauge. Boy, I should have read the description closer. First, I got enough track to fill our entire house with a layout, ( my wife did not think that was funny)., and I wondered why UPS shipping was so high. And second, I have a BUNCH of track and switches I can not positively identify, although I have my suspicions. Here are photos of the track. The curved has wooded ties, and a small metal stiffener rail under both ends of the ties. The straight has wooden ties, and the switches have a plastic tie/bottom , one piece. The switched appear to have Kadee manual switch machines riveted to the plastic ties.

So, what to I have here? Thanks

Thanks. Looks like I now have a huge pile of Gargraves track and switches. Now, if the wife would just let me take over a few more rooms here in the house, I would be all set. This is the first time I have ever seen in person, or owned any Gargraves track, although it looks like lots of folks on here use it. Might be time to tear down the little 027 layout, expand, and rebuild.

Be sure to find and read on this forum how to make a template for bending gargraves track, you might not need to use many curved pieces at all.  There are so many great gargraves ideas and solutions here, and with that goes a loud shout-out thanks to the forum contributors.

Is all Gargraves track in long lengths the flexible type, or is some just solid straight?

Jeff

Gargraves.

Umm..Are You Sure? Look again at the first picture showing the underside of the track and ties, there's a stringer near each tie end. Gargraves does NOT add wooden stringers unless they came out with a new track type? Gargraves sectional track rests on plastic ties and stringers.

Its also NOT ROSS track because there is no spikes holding the rails to the ties and Ross stringers are under each outer rail and not to the outside of each rail.

The switches though are the chincy Gargraves with corrugated plastic base.

Here are a few photos of the piles of track I ended up with. Each small pile is a bundle of 10 pieces. I have at least 50 long pieces of the Gargrave flex, and 60 pieces of the 40" Lionel straight pieces. Plus, you can see all of the additional bundles of sectional track I got. Note: Much of the Lionel appears brand new, never used. The Gargraves looks like some of it was at least laid down with small wire brads. now I need to go back and actually count up each type.

The Gargraves with stringers does happen, I had 2 cases of long straights, one stainless and one flex and both had stringers, one had plastic stringers and one metal.

I agree that you screwed up on the plus side, THAT is an impressive haul and will make a great layout. I am jealous.
