Need Help With SF GP30

Its been years since I have posted anything on the forums.

 

I received a new Legacy Santa Fe GP30 in the mail last week.  All was in good working order and everything from the sounds to mechanical operation was functional. 

 

Two nights ago I was operating the locomotive.  I pressed 4 several times to mute the sound of the locomotive since it was getting late. A bell sounds each time the sound is reduced.  I pressed until I could not hear the bell anymore.  I ran for about a half hour and then I shut things down.  I shut everything down by pulling cord to the transformer; I did not bother to hit 5 on the pad to shut things down.

 

12 hours later  I powered things back up. I hit 1 to increase the volume.  The bell chimed each time I hit 1. But no diesel RPM sounds. There was crew talk, that worked.  Horn worked. The fuel pump sounds worked. All the cab chatter about the fuel being 1/2 full, 3/4 full, empty all worked. But brake sounds, coupler opening sounds, and break sounds did not work. I put the master volume screw/knob to max and pressed 1 to the max. All the sounds were very loud, but no diesel RPM/couple/break sounds. 

 

I tried setting the locomotive to "PGM" mode, hitting "ENG", engine #, and then set as to the manual to reset and restore all Legacy features. I waited 10 seconds and then moved the switch to "RUN". This did not work. Still no diesel RPM sounds/ coupler sounds/ break sounds.  All the other sounds were there.

 

I then tried to operate the GP30 without the TMCC base, conventional mode. The diesel RPM sounds worked just fine. 

 

Went back to TMCC, diesel sounds did not function.

 

Before I send back to Lionel and pay for expensive shipping, am I doing anything wrong? What else is there to try?

 

The reason that I have not posted in awhile is that I got angry when Lionel fired their USA manufacturing employees to go to China.  I refused to buy anything new from them any any one else, so this is my first new locomotive for about a decade. The GP30 was just the right size for my setup and I gave in to temptation and bought it.

Oh, I use an 110 watt postwar RW transformer that's in pretty good shape, TMCC command base, and CAB-1 controller. The locomotive pulls about 13 cars including caboose.

Not sure what year this Legacy is, but early ones actually required an AUX number to reset features.

 

For Diesels it is #4.  Check your manual to see if this applies.

 

Otherwise this stumps me, since you have RS, just not all of them.

 

I would say pulling a plug to shutdown is probably not the best way to go especially if track voltage is still on.  Interested to see what others think.  G

WBC carefully reread your owners manual on adjusting the sound via the TMCC remote. There are seperate ajustments between the overall sound level, and the "background sounds"  Pushing AUX1 and then repeatedly hitting the #1i.e. 1,1,1,1, raises the total sound level,AUX1- 4,4,4,4 lowers the total sound level(bell sound). However hitting AUX1-1 ,AUX-1, AUX1-1, will raise the "background sounds i.e. engine rumble etc. AUX1-4, AUX1-4, AUX1-4, will lower only the background sounds (no bell sound) If you turned the diesel engine noise down via the background sounds it will not come back up until you raise the background sounds volume. I experienced the same thing with my new k-4, I thought there was a problem and actually stumbled upon the two adjustments by accident as the directions are not very clear on the different button operation in relation to raising and lowering the different sounds.

Thanks much.  That did it!  The sounds are back on. On page 22 the manual does mention AUX1 and the sound button. It does not really explain well what actually happens and what to expect.

 

GGG and John, thanks for the replies. I followed what the manual says to do on page 27 reset the locomotive.  There is no reset code in the 7 step procedure. I will have to keep this in mind and wrote the possible code into the manual.

Yes, all ended well thanks to the forum.

 

I am not sure if this is "normal", but my CAB-1 controller shuts off after about 30 seconds if I do not use it.  

 

I then have to address the locomotive again to send commands, so I press ENG, the engine number, then AUX1.  Now I can tell the train what to do.

 

So I was pressing ENG, #, AUX1 then 4 to lower the volume since my controller shuts itself off. Obviously the result of this sequence lowered the volume of the engine sounds, but not the other sounds such as bell, horn, or crew talk.  

 

Lionel was going to have me send it in, I'm glad I posted on the forum.
