At this point ( other than the fact no one from Lionel has come out and said it) its fair to say Lionel has gotten access to K Lines scale steamer tooling.

 

Other K Line "tooled" Legacy offerings to this point:

 

Light Mikado

Shay

K4

A1 Berkshire

The drivers ( and possibly other details) on the VL hudson are the K Line J1e tooling

 

I believe some of the conventional offerings are of K Line origin as well i.e. 0-4-0

 

I may have missed something.

 

Additionally, Lionel has adopted K Lines chassis/gearbox with the secondary reduction gear on most if not all of their non-articulated locos.

 

Traditional Lionel steamer gearboxes have just the worm on the motor shaft turning the drive axle gear. K Line had/has an additional shaft in the gearbox with another gear between the worm and axle. I imagine this offers greater low speed performance and possibly more pulling power from a smaller motor when necessary.

 

You can see the end of this shaft spinning behind the drive wheel of the driven axle on newer legacy steamers.

 

Yes, Legacy versions of K Line stuff are much more expensive, but its beats the fantastic K Line tooling ending up in a dumpster or something.

 

Makes one wonder if we'll see a Lionmaster " K Line tooled" allegheny.

 

Or a Legacy "K line tooled" J1e hudson, one that would surely crush the current MSRP or higher resale value of the not so accurate/detailed VL hudson.
