I am a self admitted new user to the world of DCS.  After figuring out all the wiring and now having a AIU wired with all my switches I will never go back to not using DCS.  I do have a question or two.  A few weeks ago you may recall that I had a brand new MTH locomotive go back to MTH after I inadvertently did something wrong.  The other day I received another train I was having repaired (totally unrelated) and right off the bat I removed the conventional and legacy option in the DCS remote.  Is this something recommended or a possible mistake???  I removed it not thinking of any repercussions but didn't want to see another engine fly off the layout with me in a panic and not reacting quickly enough.  Also, I presently own two conventional trains.  One is the Lionel M-7 and the other is a RMT speeder.  My sons really want to run those trains.  I am afraid to put them on the layout for fear of accidently having a catastrophe of a bunch of engines running around.  I guess my question is what is the best way to proceed?  Should I remove the MTH DCS engines and place the conventional on the track?  Or is it safe to keep them parked in the siding.  I have Barry's book, I just hoping someone would be able to explain it differently cause I don't see where I can turn on and off conventional mode.  Of course I am hoping I didn't screw it all up by deleting it from the remote.  I was thinking I was removing the conventional mode for that locomotive at the address.  Thanks for your help and sorry for the ignorant question.

It is safe to keep locos parked in a siding, BUT, the siding should be controlled by a toggle switch in the center rail feed likne, with the center rail severed (by removing pin or otherwise) at the track turnout (switch).  By killing power, mistakes won't happen.

 

I have on occasion run both conventional and DCS on the same track "loop" at the same time, but it isn't as much fun as only running DCS.

 

If you limit track power to, say, 17 volts, you'll reduce chances of any locos going too fast.
