Hello all ... nice lively discussions .... it does change the end of the telescope when considering the "World" market ...of any item ... glad to hear both the brass and die-cast  GS engines have their fans/ cheers leaders/ obsessed collectors   .....for my money  I'll go with Lobaugh from 1942  built when the real ones were running .  .....so is anyone going to defend Max Gray's version ? ... cheers Carey

I didn't say that - but they are US people looking at the US market. Lee Marsh is looking at things from a UK perspective, where 3-rail just doesn't enter the equation.

We're getting some really good, highly detailed ready-to-run 2-rail O Scale models of smaller British locos now from manufacturers such as Dapol & Minerva; 0-6-0 steam tank locos and diesel shunters, at the £200 mark. Nobody - just nobody - in Britain is calling out for 3-rail versions of them.

Nobody in Britain who can afford Lee Marsh's models will want them in 3-rail, either.

No one in the UK wants 3 rail anything, period.  I wish Lee all the best with his project, I have one of his 9f's due shortly. He had one of the GWR passenger cars at the last March Meet for perusal by those with the good taste to appreciate the craftsmanship, fidelity and intricacy.

Richard, I agree. I have lots of Scotss models and love them all. Great quality, good detail pretty accurate. Not every loco can be a Lee Marsh, MMY, Key, or Kohs.

Matt, I disagree with your post, yes they can, but it involves sacrifice and being very focused on ones chosen hobby. For several years I went without a car to fund my hobby, a sacrifice very few Americans would be prepared to make. I don't collect guns, planes or powerboats either.  However my collection is now shrinking to fund the education of both of my daughters.

That isn’t quite true as I believe you know. To say glibbly that there is no interest in anything 3 rail I would just like to remind you that the Lionel Collectors Club UK has a membership of just under 100 members who actively collect US 3 rail vintage and new items.

Then with regards to those in the UK who have a UK outline interest, what about all those that collect/operate modern ACE products which always has a strong following?

Perhaps I have missed something but please expand on your comments.

3rail has a very small, at best fractional share of the UK market as you know, it is not in the same league as the recent RTR imports from Dapol and Heljan etc, a position unlikely to change as converts to the scale or hobby demand greater fidelity. I do not know a single 0 scaler in the UK who collects either of the brands you mention, this spanning an age group from 40-80 years. Perhaps if you feel strongly about this then a thread could be opened on the GOG forum and then I will vent freely.

OK, $4500.00 AND NO SOUND AND SMOKE.

SINCE THE GS-4 DAYLIGHT IS NOT A HIGHLY DETAILED ENGINE TO BEGIN WITH WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS MORE DESIRABLE THAN THE LATEST LIONEL VERSION?

OK, WOULD PROBABLY DESIRE BRASS OVER DIECAST BUT FOR MORE THAN $2500.00 ADDITIONAL?

DOUBT THAT THESE WILL SELL AT THAT PRICE

First any lionel engine is 3 rail only, which makes if undesirable for most scale modelers.

Then Lionel and other 3 rail mfg make their steamers with rigid side rods(the rods connecting the drivers) which does not allow a flanged set of drivers to adjust to curves.    All Brass scale models I have seen have articulated side rods (a joint at each driver) which allows the middle drivers to move slightly in the opposite direction for the end drivers thus working into a curve,

Diecast has thick depth is all places such as window frames, tender edges, roof lines, pilot details etc.    Brass generally has thinner proportions where they should be and looks more like a model and less like a toy.

And Lionel generally shows they have no interest in making accurate models.    My current example is the latest run of PRR GLA hoppers.    First they changed the trucks on this run.    The first run had a creditable version of the PRR 2D-F8 truck which is correct for the car.    In the new run, they cheapened it by  using a generic bettendorf style truck.    Then after a nice paint color on the first run, for some reason this run is bright orange - They have cheapened a decent model and in my case made it much less desirable.

Your comments are well taken and make sense.  I do realize that 3 rail models have compromises in a number of dimensions and brass model have greater fidelity associated in the thickness of their parts.

Question:  On Sunsets 2 rail models, are they more correct to scale or a they just the same as their 3 rail models with a different sound system and no smoke

So we have now gone from no one in the UK wants 3 rail to a small following, I guess this is a positive change.

So now you are looking at comparing O gauge Dapol and Heljan to USA 3 rail manufacturers , bit like an apples and pears comparison, a much limited product range compared to Lionel and MTH who make products of equal and superior quality to both. MTH also manufacture items to operate on 2 rail as well FYI. Have you also seen some of the European stuff that MTH produces?

If you haven’t heard of Lionel and ACE trains then I am at a loss at understanding why you are on this forum when predominantly it talks about Lionel trains. Ace trains may be following in the style of Hornby O gauge tinplate which sounds like it is beneath you but I find it hard to understand that you have not come across them at some point.

If your interest is in pure scale O gauge then I also know of collectors of this high end O gauge market here in the UK that have US outline, it seems you are making out you are the only one, which isn’t quite the case.

Sounds like you have a lot to vent, but then probably best kept to yourself.

I have modelled USA 2-Rail O Scale for a loooong time but when I'm in England I always try to get to a Toy Train show or tin plate show call it what you want just for the nostalgia I also like Meccano shows as well but then I'm a West Aussie maybe the sun has got to my brain!

I've never been to an American Train show, a Hot Rod show yes, but never trains can't see it happening either what this has got to do with Lee Marsh I don't know but next time I go to Guildex I will have another look at his trains and think of this thread. Ha Ha. Roo.

Paragraph 2, We could argue this point all day long.

In relation to paragraph 3 of your reply this is the 2R section of the forum. I never venture on to the 3R section of this forum. Perhaps you are on the wrong section of this forum.

I own 2 Lionel items, the modern gondola and 86' boxcar both of which have been converted to 2R fine scale with Protocraft Barber S2 trucks.

Paragraph 4 is BS, I am far from  being the only enthusiast for US 0 scale in the UK, how did you draw that conclusion as at no stage have I inferred such. I have recently sold two US brass models to a well known enthusiast here and another earlier this year to another, both at opposite ends of the country.  And no, I am not suggesting there are only 3 of us - before you draw that inference.

If Ace and suchlike were all that was available in the hobby then I would have taken up RC model aircraft as a pursuit instead. The hobby may be a broad church but if it was limited to 3r then I would renounce religion.

Your last line is probably right.

Fred,

I doubt it, since the model is aimed at the American market, but I can't speak for Mr. Marsh, so I would suggest asking him directly. There is a link to Lee Marsh models in one of my previous posts earlier on in this topic. Good Luck!

Simon

Simon,

Thank you; I looked here: https://leemarshmodelco-usa.co...e-under-construction and a choice can be made for the gauge including a P48 (30 mm) gauge.
