If you really need a Pennsylvania NW2 by Christmas, Lionel made one years ago. Oh wait, silly me. You're talking about the SCALE version with Legacy on the Traditional/027 forum. My mistake.

I'm not keeping an exact count, but by reading here, the number of times Lionel has supposedly let people down this year, is in the thousands.

Marty's tag line is a good one: “I don't know what to say, except it's Christmas and we're all in misery.” Maybe people need another hobby that WILL actually make them happy.

Or maybe Lionel should ditch all the scale trains that make some people so UNHAPPY and stick with TOY trains, which is what put Lionel on the map in the first map. Ah, that wouldn't be fair to MartyE and to the few others who are actually thankful for all the electronic advances and new scale products.

Or maybe people need to start another train company and teach Lionel a good lesson. Do it the USA too, so you won't have any shipping worries. But you will need very deep pockets because no bank will loan you the money.

One of my train friends believes that in 50 years Lionel postwar will run right off the shelf or out of the box, but none of the new stuff will run at all.

You might want to tell your friend that TMCC is almost 25 years old with many, many of the original GP7/9's still running as well as the associated Cab1/TrainMaster/PowerMaster components still controlling those engines.

Arnold, just for the record, I got back into this Wonderful Hobby do to TMCC/LEGACY, buying everything in Century Club 1, and Century Club 2 and the first Sante Fe F3’, Hudson’s—-all ran spectacular out of the Box, over the years I upgraded to Legacy/VisionLine—all Even more Soectacular out of the box...Sure, sometimes adjustments needed to be made, but all of these feature rich engines are so much more fun than Post War, no Comparison.  In comparison, Automobiles from the 1950’s are nice, Collectible, however Automobiles Of today are more safe, get better gas mileage, and are electronically much more fun to drive.  So, I would not listen to everyone, buy some of these Legacy/VisionLine Locomotives and See first hand the wonderful difference Lionel has made. I think you will surely agree, these changes are Fantastic.,..I think the new NW2 will be the very best ever!!Cant Wait....60093013-4701-486A-8C97-93ECF8DCF92E2DB8691A-F525-46C9-95BB-65E483F856FC95604F4A-AFE8-41AA-9BBC-B3A8805F613B

Hey, you Lionel guys, there's a quick and easy solution to the Lionel reliability/delivery problems I read about on the Forum every day - buy MTH!  I have purchased three new Lionel engines and 15 new MTH engines.  All three Lionels went back to the factory for service, but only one of the MTHs required attention.  I have not had a delivery problem with either brand and the Lionel service was very good .

Yes, I know the sample size is too small to be statistically valid nor is MTH perfect, but everyone in the hobby I know has reported similar experience.  The best way to get Lionel to deal with their problems is to buy something else.

I would consider MTH if they could match Lionel's sound and slow speed operation.

So Dave how is your NW2 running?  Got time for a quick review?

Finally, I had a chance to take it out of the box and give you my first impressions. I decided to put it next to my MTH NW-2 for comparison. The Lionel is a little shorter than the MTH, which is a good thing. The Lionel version has the front grill O&W emblem added on (not a decal) this is very prototypical. (BTW I'm not a rivet counter.) The paint is a little lighter than I'd like it to be, but that's the least of my worries.

Now for the bad news, the engine runs great both slow and fast speeds and the sounds are great however the smoke isn't working which is the main reason I got the Lionel version because the MTH version didn't have smoke.  Another problem is programing it in the Legacy remote. It seem every time I get a new Lionel engine the method of programing them changes. Lionel doesn't give you a module anymore, it looks like I'm gonna need a sensor track. And another thing was that before I ordered it the guys at York said all new engines would have Bluetooth of course this is the only one that didn't.

Well there you go purchase at your own risk. I'm going back to try to get the smoke unit to work.

Here are some photos (sorry about the lighting on my layout photos.)

Any Legacy ( or TMCC loco for that matter) ever made can be entered into the Legacy remote manually.

Its no more difficult than logging in to this forum and posting. Go to 1:17 on the video:

This confirms the fact the Lionel NYO&W No. 116 as delivered is un-prototypical.

Catalog quote:  "Lionel is bringing this pivotal prototype to our roster of scale details with all new tooling which will capture the many detail variations found between the different prototypes including the changing body styles."

I see the resale and collectibility value of the MTH Railking scale No. 116 holding strong.

Sounds like lots of folks out there are suffering from "Lionel tunnel vision" (pun intended).  Doesn't smoke?  Lionel color is better?  Give me a break!

None at all. In command MTH cannot touch Lionel. If it comes to it I just will not purchase any more without reviews first. Why rag on those that purchased these?

I didn't intend to rag on anybody and apologize to anyone I offended.  I consider myself a Lionel fan too, but I just don't understand why people seem to ignore the widespread publicity about the problems with Lionel and buy their product anyway at a 10-20% premium over a similar MTH item.

There's a parallel in the auto industry.  In the 70's and 80's the domestic industry was so convinced their product was superior they dismissed Japanese cars as cheap little foreign imports.  The Japanese responded with well made, economical and reliable cars which we bought in droves.  Having learned their lesson the hard way, domestic makers improved the quality of their product, to our benefit.

Perhaps Lionel would respond too, if we "hit em where it hurts, the pocketbook".  If we don't demand better quality and reliability, we probably won't get it.
