Here's a tip that I don't believe I've seen on the forum before.  I observed it in use on the layout at Village Train and Hobby in Windsor, NY.  It's the use of HO flextrack as picket fencing.  Just bend it, cut it to length, and spray paint.

 

No, it's not 100% accurate scale.  But it's useful.

HO track actually comes in handy for all kinds of things.  I used HO rails to make guardrail posts for a scratchbuilt trestle:

And, I used the leftover plastic ties in building the trolley shed shown below.  The guides for the overhead door were cut from the rail anchor channels of the track:
