I am perusing a 1996 issue of The Keystone, article by Chuck Blardone ... Have any manufacturers produced any PRR so called "crew express" cabin cars?  These were used on mail and express trains (essentially in the 20s and 30s, but a few for longer).

They were mostly N5, but some N5B and C.  With Lionel's somewhat recent addition of the N5, I am wondering if they painted any up as these, which would be marked on the sides as:

"Assigned to Passenger Service

American (or Railway) Express Agency"

Thank you.

They did some without keystones, but not with the "assigned to passenger service" designation.

Heres a link to Lionels product page showing the N5bs. They are spread out over 2 pages of other pennsy stuff.

I would google actual product photos using the item #. Some of them differ in color from the catalog illustration.

Aside from the chairs in the cupola being oversized these are nice cabooses, and they have a bit of heft to them because the cupola is diecast.

* Note: Some have scale stacks, and some have a larger stack for an included smoke unit. The oversized stack on the smoke unit versions can be traded out with an optional scale stack. ( shut off the smoke of course)

The "optional" scale stacks are supposed to be included with the smoking versions.  When these were released, numerous folks were shorted the stacks but contacted Lionel and they sent them out free of charge.

I remember back several years, N5 cabin cars were scarce, with pretty much just the Williams offering, so I appreciate for sure the Lionel N5.  They are nice pieces and I do actually have a couple and a Williams.

Oddly enough, even though I am pretty much a pennsy guy, I am generally not a big user of shadow keystone rolling stock (at least not yet) because it makes things a bit too late-date-certain as late steam or diesel, whereas non shadow keystone stuff is good for all of steam era basically, to my eye at least.  But I do ignore that effect by yellow painted grabs. 😂

A version with the overlined PENNSYLVANIA with the passenger service lingo above would be sweet.

The gold lettering on that Lionel N5b in the second post above looks strange.  As far as I know, PRR cabin car lettering was always white.

For $5, you can get a full set of PRR cabin car decals from Mount Vernon Shops that include the "passenger service" and also the "buy war bonds" phrases.

You can then create some cabins that not everyone else has in their collection.

Correct, i.e. white lettering. There was a VERY misleading color photograph published in one of those "Color Books on PRR Equipment", and apparently due to sun light reflection the lettering on one of those REA Express Cabin Cars "looked" sort of yellowish. The photo was prom the 1960s if I recall.

George Kohs had a whole run of all different PRR Cabin Cars, in brass (only 2-Rail Scale), and the versions for the "Assigned to Passenger Service" cars were all lettered in white, and were about $550 each. Also, remember that each of those special Cabin Cars "Assigned to Passenger Service" had train lined steam heat connections on both ends, for the steam heat radiators that were added inside for crew comfort in the winter months.
