It's time to add a GG-1 to the roster, and I like the Williams scale version for the look VS  $ value. I run MTH ps-2/Ps-3 locos currently; (will be switching to the full DSC system soon). I would like to take the PS-2 system out one of my RTR diesels and put it in the Williams GG-1. Is this fairly easy to do?( I've installed dcc and sound systems in HO locos. so I have some experience with wiring etc.) Also could I then download the correct sound file from MTH for a GG-1 passenger version operating in the northeast corridor?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can do that, The sticking point will be moving stuff like the tach sensor mounting bracket.  You'll probably have to rig that on your own.  I've used some spacers and bonded it directly to the motor in a couple of locomotives.  You'll also need to get the tach tape sheet from MTH or one of the dealers.  As far as lighting, you'll be limited by the connectors that are in the RTR kit unless you buy additional connectors.  The 8 pin connector has marker lights, ditch lights, etc., and many times isn't installed in lower end locomotives.  If you want electrocouplers, you'll have to move them over as well.  You can download the PS/2 diesel upgrade kit instructions from MTH and you'll have a nice wiring diagram with most options illustrated.

Probably easier to grab the upgrade kit, it comes with all the connectors and lights for most installations.

Check Trainworld for current bargains on GG-1's..

you can get a sound file for the GG one.  The only place it was used was on the Northeast corridor.  Whether or not that sound file will give you an accurate speed when mated to Williams's gear ratio, flywheel diameter, and wheel diameter, is anyone's guess.
