Hello,

I have a PS1 engine that is locked in the forward direction.  I am trying to reset all the features (option 18) which should also put this back into the normal neutral start up.  The problem I am having is when I send the signal, the engine just starts moving forward and does not reset.  I also tried option 40 which is the lock out feature to set it in a direction but again the same thing happens..the engine just starts moving forward and does not go into the programming mode.

I  believe I am doing everything right with the DCS.  The track is on a variable channel and I start it up with 0 volts to the track.  I push the MPG softkey, choose my option number then press the thumb wheel.  I know the feature is working with the DCS because I took the engine off and just had a lighted caboose on the track and could see the light blinking the appropriate amount of times depending on my option choice.

Does anyone have experience with resetting a PS1 engine that is locked in a forward state?

Feature 18 ? I'm not sure that will  unlock a directional state. (it never has for me). I would use the method in the manual... Get the engine slowly moving . While holding the whistle button on   hit  the direction button... You should hear a short whistle  or bell indicating the lock out was successful.   I don't have a PS -1 manual handle  but that's  sort of how it goes.  good luck.

Wait a minute, isn't there a lock out soft-  key?

Thanks Gregg.  That softkey lock-out button (FDL) is only for PS2 engines.

I tried your whistle/direction method but it did not work.  I have the manual for my engine and it states to use reset feature 40 to change the lock-out but as I said before it is not working as the engine just comes on in the forward direction and never seems to go into the reset state.

Feature 18 is supposed to reset all features in the engine back to their default state.

For operators who wish to lock their engine into a single direction, Proto-Sound’s® unique design eliminates the need for a lock-out switch on the locomotive. This will allow users to run the engine on layouts equipped with block signals or stop stations that would normally cycle the engine back into neutral. Note: The feature must be first turned on by accessing RESET Feature 40 (See page 22).

Locking the Engine into Single Direction Operation Cycle the transformer throttle so that your engine is operating in the direction you wish to lock it in (forward, neutral or reverse). With the throttle set to approximately 8 volts, press and hold the horn/whistle button. While holding the horn/whistle button, turn the throttle OFF, and then release the horn/whistle button. After 2 seconds, you will hear a short horn blast. IMMEDIATELY turn the throttle back on. The engine is now locked, and will continue in the previous direction whenever power is applied to the track.

Unlocking The Engine With the throttle set to approximately 8 volts, press and hold the horn/whistle button. While holding the horn/whistle button, turn the throttle OFF, and then release the horn/whistle button. After three seconds, a single bell will be heard indicating that the engine is unlocked. When power is again applied, the engine will enter RESET and perform as normal.

This worked!  Thanks Gregg.  Somehow I missed these directions in the manual but I see them now.

Thanks again.
