The standard Proto Sound speaker is 8 ohm, 0.2W,  2" diameter.  I need a smaller diameter, preferably 1.5", and about 1/2" thick.  Digi-Key has numerous speakers in the size range desired, but I do not know if the frequency range and other parameters  will match.

Can anyone recommend a smaller speaker with the desired parameters for Proto Sound 1?

that selection and the prices at Digi -key look pretty good.

Make sure you stay with the same ohms that the original had.

As far as the size, that would vary by the model of what you're putting it in, so you know that here.

The rest of the parameters are set by you. The freq would be a full range. The lower it goes the better.

The wattage should be higher than needed. A few watts is good enough in trains.

I've had good luck with the peerless brand so far in all of mine.

typically you'd look at the efficiency of the speaker too. This application is so small for sound fidelity, that some things aren't fully realized. Some tiny speakers just don't move much air. You can't develop very big sound with low power and tiny speakers without some major innovation. It is surprising to me how much sound does come from the diesel's fuel tank. I never really go by all the specs. They don't paint the full picture of a speaker. Free air resonance and other specs give a general idea only.

You obviously won't get sound down to 20 hz out of a 2" or smaller speaker in this application. It is nice to get anything around 100 hz or lower (80) accentuated. I put a better quality peerless speaker in my 3rd rail Niagara PS conversion and the bass is much better defined. A tender can make a good enclosure for deeper sound over the diesel's smaller fuel tank. That peerless speaker I used is about twice as deep as a stock speaker.

I love the idea of subwoofers under the layout that are connected with blue tooth to the trains. Maybe someday soon.

I was excited to learn that Lionel had gone to a 3rd speaker in the boiler with the bass developed more in the 2 tender speakers. It seems like they gave that idea up?
