I just got a 4-6-2 Bantam steam engine (PS2) off of Ebay for a smoking deal.  It was advertised with a problem that it will play the parked sounds when engine is in motion .  I tested the engine and sure enough when I run the engine with DCS the only engine sound it will play is the sitting engine sounds in the yard at 0 SMPH.  It performs the same behavior when running conventiuonal as well.

Whistle, Bell works and all control functions with the DCS remote workd.  With the DCS remote there is one caviat, when I set the remote to anything but 0 the engine just takes off wheter revesing or in forward.  I realized later that when I actuate the transformer lever that the engine's speeds changes as though it is running conventional even though I can control functions with the DCS remote.  No matter what speed I set the remote the engines speed remains constant.  The speed can only be controlled by track voltage.

I was baffled by this but after thinking it through it occured to me that the inability of the engine to detect or recevie signals from the Tach sensor could be causing this.  Am I on the write track here or is there other commmon causes for this behavior.  Also if it is the Tach how can I test whether it is working or not?

Regards
