So I purchased one of the newer giraffe cars (6-16725), manual can be found here, that had a worm gear to make the head bob up and down. I noticed however that the wheel set with the gear is a bit loose, and so the gear doesn't always catch the teeth of the gear wheel and the rhino head doesn't bob up and down consistently. It works better when the train is thrown in reverse (as the worm gear is then sort of "pushed into" the gear wheel).  Is this by design (I doubt it) and is there a way to get the wheel set to not be so "loose" in the truck? Or is this just the way these were designed and it's simply to be expected.

Deuce, I don't know how loose yours is, but there is a little bit a play there normally. The issue, I think, is that the car is on the lightweight side. You could experiment, by snapping off the box car shell, and place some small weights on the frame of the car nearest the side of the rotating gear. This is what I did on mine.

If you don't have any self-adhesive tire balancing weights (which is what I like to use), you could try some steel washers or nuts. See what works best and then you can glue them or duct tape them into place.

Also make sure you've got some plastic safe lubricant on both gears.

OK, the plastic worm gear is actually a larger diameter than the metal one. There are loose as you describe. They work best on flat track. Have you reversed the car in the train, so the worm gear pushed from the opposite side?

I have, and it works better, though still not as consistent as I would expect. Guess it's just a "design feature".
