Hi everyone.  Two quick questions: do MTH steam locomotives need an AC- connection through the drive wheels?  I’m cosmetically modifying an MTH PRR D16 4-4-0 to represent a 1920’s-era D16b, and the final piece of the puzzle is to fit it with 68” drivers.  I’ve found a set of the correct size, and although the tires are metal the wheel centers are hard plastic and thus not conductive.  Will that cause problems?  I’ve checked clearances and everything else should work.  It’ll even fix the 1+ scale foot gap between the pilot and railhead!

Also, the banshee (freight) whistle in the sound file just bothers me.  Is there a way to change the sound file to the prototypical PRR 3 chime?  There's a sound file on the MTH page for this loco: http://mthtrains.com/content/20-3156-1.  Is that just the same sound set it came with?

Search here for a sound file

I don't know if the Penn file will be better? MTh trains>service product files and documents, to find others. You will need DCS, or a friend with DCS to download files into the train. There is no way to listen ahead of time. MTH PS2 speed control is tied to the sound file. Since these can't be double headed, minor variance probably won't bother you, so you can try other steam files, especially since you are changing the speed by changing the drivers.

As to the need for driver pickup, Check continuity from the tender trucks to the ground pickup point. I believe the tender wheels act as pickup, so you might be OK.
