R2LC 13 swap with R2LC 8?

Ted, that engine was made with R2LC  C08.    Engine number 6-38616.  You are good to go with your choice.  When you program this locomotive, remember to use AUX-1  code74.  This engine did not have an IR tether but did use AUX code 74.  The code C13 R2LC   was mainly used to replace the C11 R2LC used in the JLC  GG-1 and the C12.  It had other uses but this was  a common use.

I re-programmed the r2lc in that engine with a 4 which is steam with smoke. Ok, I will do it again with the 74. I do know the codes and what they are associated with.

Do you think I can program that engine to say "Go Eagles" !

I'm reasonably certain your first take was correct in both cases.

1) This loco shipped with an R2LCC13. While the advice I've been told is to replace everything up to C08 with a C08, and replace C11 and C12 with a C13, I can't think of a reason why a C08 wouldn't work in your instance. The later revs mainly covered features relating to speed control, the Acela and things like operating pantographs -- none of which apply to your loco.

2) Your reset code of 4 is correct. The 74 code inverts the serial line for the AD20 on locos with a wireless tether. Since your loco has a wired tether, 4 is the way to go.

In the manual number 74 was called for.  We are so lucky the Legacy RCMC board put those modular boards out to pasture.

Using the engine programmed to a 4 on the r2lc, all seems to run fine. I just have to figure out why it slightly binds at times. This engine is a club members and at times, I am the repair doctor for the club. I was told to look at the brake shoes on the rear drivers that have the traction tires as they can be bent a little.

Maybe if I program the r2lc to a 74, it will say the "N.Y. Jets win the 2019 Super Bowl" ! Lol!

There might be some unpublished codes in the R2LC's, but I know that's a particular instance that was never planned -- as everyone knew the Jets were completely incapable of ever winning a Super Bowl.

It looks like the manual was wrong, unfortunately.

Can you help me understand why we are so lucky for the new Legacy boards? I completely get it from a feature/functional stand-point, but I don't understand what was so bad about the modular architecture from a serviceability perspective.

It was hard to believe that the Pats mismanaged their timeouts like they did, normally they would have had all of them in the last two minutes.  Having only one really put a crimp on their style.
