Just bought the RailKing ps3 ac70 engine and it is stopping dead,like lossing power, as it goes into my ross switches. I have tried it in  forward and reverse and it still does the same. I have run all kinds of engines and never run into this problem. I also having the same problem with fasttrack switches.  Would it be that one of the rolling pick up is not working ? Need some help.

I am eagerly watching for a reply too as the same thing just happened to me - track wired up last nite (DCS) and tested with my RK PS3 SD70ACe.  Stopped dead right as it entered a Ross #8 switches.  I have power thru the proper legs, but i am _thinking_ (still need to verify) that the frog is raising the wheels just enough to make the roller lose contact with the center rail.  Happens with an RK psgr car too.

Easy test...  try a continuity meter between the rollers at the work bench.

 

 or put a piece of electrical tape about 3 inches long on the center rail.... park one  trucks roller(s) on the tape , the other trucks roller(s) should fire up the engine, repeat test with other roller parked on the tape.  If engine fire up both times rollers are ok. 

Just a note ... Some of the large Ross switches require a relay for borrowing an outside rail and making it hot to prevent stalling

Tape test worked perfectly fine - neat idea - thanks!  I discovered my problem was the insulated frog - wheels were riding up a bit and lost contact - Dremel took care of the problem.

 

I glad you solved your problem.  I would still be concerned that the capacitor, which replaced the battery in ps3, is not charging. If it was working as designed, the engine should keep running when it hits dead spots.

Gentlemen,

   Although you are working with a newer engine, it maybe set up roller wise similar to PW Tin Plate and both the FasTrack and Ross switches will not accommodate

these engines, no matter if they are Lionel, MTH or anything else.  The newer switches just do not have enough metal in them at exactly the points needed to keep certain engine moving.   One of my biggest engineering gripes is that these modern switches, are not engineered to run all different kinds of engines and rolling stock.
