Does anyone know how you remove the motors from Lionel's HHP-8 Amtrak locomotive? I have the one that came with the set of Amfleet cars, it has the smaller motors and doesn't want to pull too many cars. I've just purchased the Railsounds HHP-8 that has larger, stronger motors. If I can get the motors out of the older unit I might experiment with some larger DC can motors, or maybe just make it a dummy. Any ideas out there?
You can't put the larger motors into the chassis and trucks that came with the smaller motors, they are a different mounting design. I think you might be able to use the larger motors by replacing the motors and the motor mount, the trucks have the same part number. Who knows, you might be able to cobble the old mount for the new motors, though I can't say without having them both in front of me. They do look pretty similar.
The truck has to come somewhat apart to remove the motors, they're on a separate motor mount. You first remove the motor mount from below, then the motor.
