Both Postwar and Modern era Lionel made many of their alcos and switchers using motor trucks of the same basic design. These motors have a worm gear mounted on an axle in the center the truck. The wheels are driven from that axle by spur gears.

I have a Hobby Horse tool set that is designed to push out the axle so a worn worm gear can be replaced.

So far, every time I've tried to make this repair, I've found that the axle was stepped on both ends, and could not simply be pressed out.  I found a picture of a 8010-190 worm wheel axle, it is only stepped on one end.

I've run into this on both Postwar and Modern era motor assemblies.

Which motors use the 8010-190 axle that is stepped only on one end?

Which motors use the axle that is stepped on both ends?

I did a little poking in my junk pile, and here is what I found:

I have a few junk postwar alco/sw-2 motor trucks, all of them have worm wheel axles with both ends of the shaft stepped.

I have a couple of modern era Alco/sw-2/geep motor trucks with the later style pickups (8209-165). They both have worm wheel axles with a single step.

The modern era alco motor truck that has a worm wheel axle with steps on both ends has the scout style hollow roller pick-ups.

(The truck is now toast.... oh well)
