Replacement Motor Question

Pretty much its a real pain. Now the larger one you found appears to have the same gear as the small motor. If so then its much easier. Still not a drop in though. You will have to remove some material around the motor mount to fit the larger motor.

Thanks Pete, sounds like some work for my Dremel.

I think you found a better motor than I did. I had to replace the gear and also machine the flywheel to fit. If all you have to do is hog out the frame then it will be pretty easy.

Do you know what that motor came from? I suspect many others will be interested.

Pete, that other motor is for a Lionel Berkshire Jr. such as 6-28696.

Thanks bigdodgetrain, that link is to upgrade a pullmor with a can motor. I just wanted to replace my wimpy can motor with a slightly beefier one.

I don't think it will work. 3 reasons. The first is the worm gear pitch between the smaller original motor and the larger motor shown from a Berk. Jr. locomotive is close, but not the same. Probably end up with chewed up gears, that is if you can get past problem 2 and 3. 2nd., the frame on the 0-8-0 is plastic and not die-cast metal. The motor mount is cast into the plastic frame. Major Dremeling and is non reversible. 3rd, motor is taller than original and flywheel probably will not clear boiler shell.

I think if it was possible to fit the larger motor in the 0-8-0 Lionel probably would have done this already.

Thanks Chuck, I ordered both motors just to be on the safe side and to check for things like clearance. I guess if it somehow fits under the boiler that I'd have to pull the worm gear off the old motor and then mount it on the new one. I don't have a gear puller so I'd have to get that as well. I'll have to wait until the motors arrive and then I'll have a better idea if this swap is feasible.

Chuck, Its doable. I did this on my 0-8-0. I can post a pic later. The hard part is not opening up the motor mount on the engine, its having to the replace the gear. If Dave can find a motor with the correct gear already on it a little Dremel work will suffice. I think the spacing on the motor mount screws is the same.

Dave, hopefully you won't have to swap gears. You can get it off with a puller, its putting that gear on the bigger motor that is tough to do without bending the shaft. You could make the hole a sliding fit and then use super glue as long as the glue doesn't get in the bearing. Seems easy but lots of ways it can go wrong.

It didn't work with the motor I used. I had to swap gears and machine down the flywheel. Thats why I caution others to try and find a replacement that has the same gear as the small motor.

I got the replacement motors in yesterday and they look like the same gear to me. I'm not a worm gear expert but I think if the two gears match then they are compatible for a swap. Here's a picture of them nested inside each other. Original on left, possible replacement on right.

If you look closely, there is enough difference between the two to make problems, but hey, give it a try and let us know.

That slight difference is actually me not being able to get them to sit still / close enough for a picture. When I was using both hands under my magnify glass they were the same. I don't have time for an install for at least another week, but I'll post an update once I'm able to get to it.
