So Mike,

Without getting into the specifics of your transaction, was it an overall positive experience?  Because Lou is such a dear friend to so many of us we are very protective of him.  To me some rather shallow people don't like the fact that Lou doesn't keep up with all the latest technology such as, internet, email, facebook, etc. but continues to do business the old fashioned way (it's only worked for him for 65 years, or so).

I believe most people find him to be refreshing but I'd sure like to hear from some of his recent customers.

Thanks,

Jay

Jay,

I've dealt with Lou at O Scale West this year and the experience was also positive. I've known Lou for several years, which was why I was so offended by someone's remarks here. We put together parts and rail for a #8 double crossover I intend to do soon. I've also done a few transaction over the phone and always had everything I ordered within 3 days. And that is only 3000 miles in distance. I always prefer the live contact with someone when conducting business. It's so much more personal. It is only the socially inept and retarded that prefers otherwise. I'm glad you had a good experience Michael. Lou is a class act.

Jay,

I think a better word is arrogant! Digital technology has it's good points, but it is not the be-all great and wonderful answer to everything. I suspect that Mr. Cross is better off not dealing with people of that ilk.

My transactions with Lou have always been very positive.  He is a true gentleman and is very helpful with any questiones one may have.  I find the fact that he does business this way refreshing, it's simple and personal which is rare these days.  My very first phone call to him was funny, he answers and said "Hello"..I had been expecting him to say something about ROW.  Any way I said that I had some questions about his castings and he asked who I was, so I gave him my name and we had our conversation, and you know it was like talking with my grandfather, very calm, warm and friendly.  It is a shame that the remarks were made regarding his lack of technology, I also have some words but I will refrain.  Michael I am glad your experience was also a positive one with Lou.

So, we go from a recent thread that started out finding fault, or at least, impatience, with a man who shuns the web and email, now to name-calling about the rest of the world. I agreed with the rebuttal about the gent who prefers his way of doing things, because it works for him, and he seems to have enough trade not to warrant changing his business model. He seems to be an expert, and a character, in the nicest sense of the word. Good for him!

I prefer the web for purchases, because I can do it anytime, dressed in my PJ's if necessary. There are few language or cultural barriers to commerce on the web. Emails get right to the point, and the point is commerce.

My two businesses, where I sell stuff, have benefited greatly by our web presence.  Sales increased two-fold upon the installation of an 800 number, and sales increased again 4-fold when we starting accepting credit cards for purchases.

I enjoy immensely visiting with folks on the telephone, and getting and giving technical advice, sprinkled with off-topic discussions. I enjoy the English language and its derivatives, too, and consider oral conversation one of my favorite activities.  Bad English is worse than no English at all, though.

To sum, I am not inept, nor am I retarded, and I am a web user.

Arthur,

I am sorry if you took offense to my comment. It was not intended to insult anyone in the group. When an unnamed person repeatedly slams an individual for not doing business the way they want and continually inflames the group with an arrogant and callous attitude towards this persons desired way to conduct his business, it sometimes brings out a less than professional attitude toward him. I will choose my words a little more wisely next time instead of responding in anger. Or I will choose not to be involved in any discussions involving this person. My apologies Arthur.
