I replaced the battery with a BCR in a PS2. When I put power to the 392E locomotive, it would only run in reverse, and would not respond to commands from the Zcontroller. So, I cannot change the direction, and I cannot do a factory reset.
Any suggestions on my next step?

Sounds like someone locked it into reverse. You can repeat the sequence to return it to normal operation.
You might also try a factory reset.
Factory reset can only be done in neutral. The unlock feature is done while it is moving, but as low a voltage as possible (turn off smoke unit), but still moving. May take repeated attempts. Dealers would bring locos into MTH because they couldn’t get the sequence right. It is a little finicky.
This video shows the finicky W B button timing. You want the engine stopped or moving as slowly as possible. Even if the engine is locked in the fwd or rev direction (and hence you can't get into the neutral state via the Direction button) there is a small zone on the throttle equivalent to a track voltage of around 8 Volts which sets the conventional speed to 0 with lights/sounds operating.
