Show Us Your Southern Pacific Steam and Early Diesel Motive Power

Matt, you can't be modeling the SP in the early 1950s with that Lionel GS-4 still painted & lettered for the 1941 "as delivered" (Southern Pacific Lines) scheme. Now what to do? 

 

Actually I have the same situation, so I think I'm going to have the tender re-painted/re-lettered  for the large "billboard lettering".

I do not hink SP proper had 4 axle RS2/3's.  They did have the RSD's.  SSW/Cotton Belt did have the RS's.

Yeah... Dominic...you're right.  SP didn't, but SSW/Cotton Belt did have the RS-3.  We'll just say that the SSW "gave" on of their RS-3's to the Brisbane & Bushong RR and they painted it in the SP livery.  Same with the GS-4 Daylight.  Works for the CEO of the B&B and for me (Superintendent of Equipment).  Matt

Ironically enough, the cab# on your K-Line model is in fact correct for a Cotton Belt RS-3.

Thanks.  I am kinda strange.  I used to like to visit the park once every couple of months, but now will go there only if absolutely necessary.  I am spoiled - I never fight traffic and hate parking hassles.

 

if you ever want to see some of these things, I am at Montgomery Field daily, and can give you a tour of the Decathlon hangar.

 

I am not much of an operator.  I build these things, give them a five hour shakedown run to make sure they work, and park them on display.  I like to create.

I know Sunset made the SP P-8 4-6-2 Pacific (I think they even made the 2472).  Did they ever make an SP Mikado?  Matt

Yes on both accounts. I have a Sunset/3rd Rail SP P-10 Pacific #2478 plus a Sunset/3rd Rail MT-5. I was not able to get an SP MK class Mikado, and have since stopped looking since they were NOT TMCC equipped, besides I would prefer the 2-10-2 with the bigger tender that Sunset/3rd Rail produced. Even though the boiler taper is incorrect, which REALLY up-sets "Bob-2", one of my favorite Sunset/3rd Rail models is the SP Class 4-10-2.

As usual, my photography stinks, but the engines are cool.  Early prototype and early TMCC technology in a perfectly matched set.

William, those are great early TMCC engines. I too have both , never could find the "B" unit at a reasonable price at the time. I've toyed with selling them along with the CP version and then pull them out and run them and I change my mind.

Since the two units in the photo, from William 1, are SP GP9 units, what "B" unit are you talking about? The SP didn't have GP9B units anyway.

Yep, SP never had a GP9 b unit.  Apparently Lionel indulged in creative license and made a cabless B unit  (ack!).  Even the cab number doesn't match the actual SP numbering scheme used (pre- nor post-1965). 

 

If they did the B unit in UP livery then it would be accurate.  But then, Lionel also recently offered the FT diesel set in SP black widow, and SP never owned an FT either (although their subsidiary Cotton Belt did).

 

Yes they are around.  That would look sweet in the middle, with the wings on both sides of the unit.   This set of powered units is truly a matched set, in the sense that their sounds are identical.  In all the other 'consist' sets, the units have different sounds, which is best of course. The trick is to start the units seperately, which gives ever so slight variation.  I do run them in a 'consist' with the CP unit frequently.
