I set up my sons' first "real" train set as shown in the pictures attached.  I purchased a Lionel 6-81603 Lion Chief 72-Watt power supply 4 amp since I was running 2 trains and then purchased a Lionel #6-81317 FasTrack Accessory Activator Track Pack to work the Gateman accessory automatically.  I can't figure out how to have separate power operate just the Gateman accessory since I am having a problem running everything on the single power source.  Nothing works correctly when the Gateman accessory is connected.  The Thomas train stops when it reaches the FasTrack Activator Track Pack, the gateman does not come out and sometimes the Hogwarts train will stop.  I then unplug the gateman accessory and everything works again.  I'm not sure where to go from here.  I am a novice railroader and need all the help I can get.  I have read many posts and watched many videos but no one is using the pieces and parts that I have.  Before I buy anything more, I would like to understand what the problem is and how to fix it.  Thanks for any help you can send my way.IMG_9780IMG_9781IMG_9782IMG_9783IMG_9784IMG_9785

I don't have experience with the plug-n-play, but do start by verifying that the 2, 5 inch sections of track from that activator pack are properly oriented on each side of the activator track.

Next I would test out the gateman itself.  I assume the red and black wires are track power, but I don't know with is the center rail.  I you can figure out which color is connected to the outside rail, then unclip that wire from its spot, and touch it to the white wire connection with the transformer on, and the plug into the track. [I could be all wrong, and will re-edit if I find out.]  Logically. you need to connect the "switched wire" (I assume white) to the outside rail wire to test the gateman

What do you use the plug-n-play tracks with the multiple connections for (I see two)?

Hi Serpman,

I hope this an easy one. Easy to do by anyone.

Check the 5'' straight tracks that are included with the Activator package. They should be on either end of the 10" activator straight with the PnP jack. One of the outside rails on each 5" track section has a cut in the rail. The cuts/slits in the one rail should be oriented/aligned on the same outside rail. problems if not.

if they are reversed you will lose the ground( in your case) in that section. This is what I am hoping for.

Same side , now?

Now, connect the Gateman to the connector on the activator section. remove all of the trains. Plug in the power pack. The Gateman should be lit.

next, take Annie or Clarabel and roll it on the track into the activator section. Did Hat come out? Roll it through the section and Hat should go back.

All good?

next add Thomas. All ok? If yes, add Hogwarts engine and tender. All ok? if yes, add a Hogwarts car one at time.

Continue the procedure and roll a Thomas coach through the activator section each time and confirm Hat operation and adequate power.

The desired result is that all trains are back on, Hat works and the power pack doesn't kick out.

let us know the results.
