Stand alone slide scanner......

I have used an Epson 3490 scanner . You can set the resolution. I have never been

able to get 20 megapixel scans. So I recently bought a Wolverine scanner from

Costco because it was advertised as yielding 20M. So far the best I have been able to get is 2.5M.

I just picked up a plustek 8200i and honestly, still wrestling with initial uses. It was highly recommend on Trainorders.com and other RR sites. I'll look for this thread after I master this thing.

This scanner is for slides, though you still need a PC in between the scanner and the SD card.

I have used a Cannon scanner to digitize all my old photos and I am happy with the results.

I use a Nikon Coolscan V which also scans filmstrips.

Like Samtrak, I have a Plustek 8200i.  It's not particularly fast, but that's okay for me.  I just want to digitize the 24,000 railroad images I have shot since the mid-60s.  It is a nice, compact scanner...and also does some family Kodacolor family shots.

If you go to my Flickr page, http://www.flickr.com/photos/captain_railroad/sets/, you'll see more than 6,000 slides that I have scanned to date.  Most of my work over the years (I did not go digital until 2009 just before the steam festival in Owosso) was done in Kodachrome.

The Plustek does require you to go through your computer.  I've loaded the program that comes with the scanner on my desktop, which is not connected to the Internet.  When done scanning, I download images to my stick and put it on Flickr via my Mac.  Technology and I are infrequent friends, so if I've been able to master the program I suspect any Forum member will have no trouble. 

I had a HP scanner that used a lighted slot in the cover for slides, it & my printer didn't work with Windows 8 so I bought an all in one. I doubt it will scan slides.
