Actually, I don't think it is the largest. Perhaps was at one point, but I'm not sure that distinction applies today,
Amazing
So Allan, who is the biggest now? More importantly... who is the biggest 0 Gauge layout? Is that even established or are there just rumors of a hidden away layout?
I think the biggest O gauge one is the one in Paterson,NJ. The largest HO is in Hamburg,Germany.
You have to qualify the Hamburg one, it's more than a model RR. This may have more RR components than Miniatur Wunderland, hard to say.
In any case, that's one impressive model railroad!
The German layout definitely qualifies as a model railroad (the central theme of the operation), and I'm reasonably sure it's larger than Northlandz. I'll look up the overall dimensions of both at some point, but at the moment I don't have the time for that.
Having known and assisted both Bruce at the FC&N his 3 to 5 basements layout 1970's to 1990's then 1990's to the new present day Northlandz and the Ben at the NJ Hi-Railers from 2005 to 2010 I can't say who or where the biggest layout is, but Bruce's 2 story 52,000 sq. ft. building had to hold the record in 1997 when it opened. Bruce did work 19 hours a day and built all of the bridges himself. Ben and the Hi-Railers are still going at it and only God knows where this is going.
They seem to take on a life of their own.

I checked the specifications for Minatur Wunderland, they have: As of January 2011, the railway consists of 12,000 metres (39,370 ft) of track in HO scale. With his 8 miles of track, he's in the race for the largest RR.
Looks like Miniatur Wunderland gets the nod at 68,889 sq ft (from wiki) vs the 52,000 sq ft listed in the above article in total floor/building space.
Northlandz is cool....but does not compare to the Hamburg layout. The animation and automation of the German HO layout is amazing. Plus the German display is bigger.
The advantage of Northlandz is I can drive to it. I agree it's not as impressive overall as Minatur Wunderland, but I was just talking the RR portion. The stuff at Minatur Wunderland is clearly in a class by itself, and the prices match!
Excessive and loneliness - is what I came away with...

Pretty amazing the 2 largest layouts are within a 2 hour drive of each other. We are fortunate!!

That would be the NJ Hi-Railers! http://www.njhirailers.com/
We're in the process of documenting the track plan in RR-Track. What a job! We've been working on it for several months now and it'll probably take a good part of this year to complete. Perhaps then we'll have an objective measure of it being the largest O-Gauge layout in the world. I'm willing to bet it will be the largest plan ever developed in RR-Track. Hope it can handle it.
I'm thinking of starting an over/under as to how many scale miles of track are in the layout! Winner gets the pride and prestige of being right.
Northlandz I have been to several times, and unfortunatley I have not gone back again. The last time I was there about 3 years ago, a good deal of the layout was not operational, or in very poor condition.
A lot of it from visitor abuse, throwing coins on the tracks, destroying scenery etc.
It seems that the maintenance was not keeping pace with the amount of damage that was done.
I hope that someone has been there recently and this has changed for the better!
It was a shame to see such a great layout in this level of dis-repair.

But does Hamburg have a magnificent pipe organ?
...There's just no proper way to answer to this one; that's some impressive Organ
