Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.  I have ordered the mth chip re-set kit for PS 1, part number is 50-1023.  mth was out of them, but I did find it at one of the dealers and it is on it's way to me.  When it arrives I will do what is needed to get my Southern Pacific cab forward "off the shelf" and on to the rails.  If you have done this "modification".....is there anything I need to know in advance?  I have installed the BCR in anticipation.  It is my thinking that I tried this engine prior to making sure the battery that was in it (forever) had any power, and hence the "three clanks of death".

  

By the way, I have now installed 10 BCR devices in engines, most of which were PS 1.  They work perfectly!  These engines sat for 20+ years!  I had long forgotten how nice the PS1 engines look and run!  (I had to go and read the direction for operation as the PS1 engines are a little different than the PS2 and PS3!)  All the mth engines have "personality" ....and I like that.

 

Again, in my opinion.....and it is only my opinion.....of all the mth operating systems, I like the PS2 with BCR the best.  I have a few engines with PS3, and again in my opinion....it is too much.  The PS1 engines are good engines, less features for sure, but they look and run great.

AMF I agree with your conclusions. I run conventionally and for me the best are the Proto 2 engines with the 3 volt boards. I can't recall ever changing a 3 volt battery and the start up is much quicker than with Proto 3. Proto 1 engines with a BCR installed are bulletproof. The premier steamers used a Pittman motor while newer engines don't. When you reset the chip and go to run the engine be sure and charge the BCR for 60 seconds by the clock and all should be well.
