The TIU has intermittently been shutting down for the last week. After sitting it would reset. Today it wouldn't. No red led light no power. I tool it apart and checked the 4 20 amp fuses and all are good. I can hear a little click when power is applied but no further action. Any idea what I can do next?

send to a technician for repair , would be glad to help you! which version of tiu is it rev l g h i 13a etc !
Alan
alan it is either rev l or rev 1. It is at least 10 years old and has a rs232 port. I am going to have to get a new one tomorrow as this is a Christmas layout and will be up only a few more weeks. Is is economically feasible to fix this old unit?

To me, this sounds more like a problem with whatever is providing power to the TIU rather than the TIU itself.
How are you powering the TIU, via Fixed #1 In or via the Aux. Power port?
powered by MTH Z4000 fixed 1. I can hear a clicking in TIU like a relay trying to click in but no led or power.
Did you try an aux power supply? Might be worth it....
The TIU doesn't have anything that "clicks", so I'm not sure what you're hearing!
I think you have a engine on the track and when you power up your hearing a relay clicking inside the engine on the track!
as John has said there are no relays inside the tiu!
Alan
There are two relays in a TIU. You can hear them click when flashing a PS3 Board.
The Part is OMRON G5LA-14

Those relays are how Fixed voltage can be commanded off with the emergency shut down. As Dave stated, you hear them when the loader program commands power off and on during a SF load. G
powered with aux. power and red light comes on. Power into fixed one and nothing to track. Power to fixed 2 and power to track and everything works. What is the prognosis on the tiu. Did half of it fail?
Check the diode on the output side of fixed 1. It is the black one parallel to the edge of the case. If there is continuity across it, it needs replaced.
I forgot about those too Dave, I should have looked at a TIU.
In any case, they don't make a sound when I power up the TIU or apply power to the input channels, so it's not a sound I normally hear.
If the diode was shorted, there would be a short on the input side when power applied. Your saying your getting no output of Fixed one. No short either?? Is it possible one of the terminal wires has broken on fixed one? Are you sure the fuse is good? G
RC Crafter,
Both GGG and David M are giving you great advise, I would double check the fuse and the terminal connection, then drive on from there. Had one of my connection wires work loose long ago, and also blew one of my fuses before Barry put me straight on putting breakers between my TIU's and all my Transformers.

I posted above I got it working using aux. power and putting power in fixed 2. We just had kids over and ran for an hour no issues. Tomorrow I'll take another look at it and see if there are any issues with fixed 1 I can see.
