"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

First, spoiler alert - don't read if you do the puzzle, but haven't yet today.

With that in mind:

Clue for 14 Down is: Proportionate size for some model trains.

In a blog about the puzzle which I sometimes read was this, about the answer and clue:

As for the model trains, that clue is just perverse. G-SCALE is a perfectly normal musical thing* and you've gone and gunked it up with this dated / niche hobbyist clue (14D: Proportionate size for some model trains). I have only ever seen men and boys (always men and boys) playing with model trains on television and in movies. Never (ever) in real life. I'm fine with old men playing with children's toys, believe me, but it's bizarre to have a clue that's aimed at only roughly six such men on the planet. I hope they're happy. *technically "G major scale" but frequently just called "G SCALE"

Here's a link to the whole post about the puzzle. If you go to the comments section (a link at the bottom), a couple people (so far) have posted about having had Lionel trains.

Man that opens a can of worms *lol*, I can just imagine (on the other hand choosing G scale is interesting, sounds like the person creating it must have them or know someone that does ). The commenter who said G scale would be appropriate for music is going to get bashed by the music types, there is no such thing as "G scale" as such, would be G minor scale or G major scale, G scale itself is meaningless.....

Veteran crossword guy here who does them daily from a variety of sources and the language I bolded above tells me all I need to know about the commenter to that blog.

Ah, yes, the folks that complain about the unfairness of certain categories of clues and answers. It's usually pop culture, sports, foreign languages or the Bible. In other words, pick your poison. The point being some only want crosswords to be about the stuff they know about!
