Opened up this PS2 diesel and I don't see an obvious way to get this battery out. I must be missing something so before I do something stupid I thought I would check to see if we have a voice of experience to help me out. Thanks in advance!

That's a rough one. Sometimes there's no extra space and they shove things in there. Looks like a great candidate for a BCR2.
Joe, Amen to that, and you guessed the reason I want to get the battery out -to put in a bcr. It is a lot smaller and won't need the battery cradle but I need to get that old one out and I hate to start taking screws loose and clipping wire wraps. the fewer things touched by me the better!
Looks like two choices: 1) remove the main board (location of screws not obvious to me). I loosened two screws I thought might do this but the black metal board holder did not appear to budge. 2) cut some plastic out of the battery holder. Hmmmm?
Sorry, I was out for dinner. Good advice on removing the smoke unit first. I was inside an engine like this before and I didn't think of any short cuts. Sometimes you just have to dive in. I usually remove more stuff than needed the first time. I haven't gone inside my GPs yet.
Thanks, I will give a try in the morning, I did not think removing the smoke unit would give enough space but I defer to experience!
Put a BCR in it and save yourself any future aggravation.
Never open it again. 
Well... at least not for a battery replacement. 
For Paul R and GRJ, a commercial message, one of John's super caps was installed this morning and the GP40 is in service connecting the RF&P to the Free Union, Blacksburg, and Albemarle Railroad (FUBAR). Thanks for the motivation from banjo flyer and Joe, I did not break anything prying the old battery out!
