Hi, kinda a newbie to DCS, and I want to update my TIU (s) and remote to 4.30. Is the 50-1032 cable the same as the 1018 cable as far as updating the tiu? Is that the cable I need to get along with the 50-1009 cable? Also do I update the 2 tiu's and then the remote? Is there something special I need to do since I have 2 tiu's and 1 remote? Last question, running windows 7, which file do i need? Looks complicated and a little conserned I may screw this up. Thanks JB

From the mTH web site, download and install the version 2.34 loader program, and also the version 4.30 DCS program, which will create files that the loader program will access.

Unless both your TIUs are Rev L, you'll need a cable to connect the USB port on your computer (I assume your computer doesn't have a serial port; few now do) to the serial port on the TIU.  Radio SHack has one made by Gigaware that seems to work well.  If both TIUs are Rev L, a simple USB cable will do the job.

You will need a telephone handset cord, 4 conductor, to connect the TIU and the remote, only for updating the remote.  You'll need a short cable with a 1/8" stereo jack at each end, for updating the TIU (it connects between the two jacks at one end of the TIU.)  If your TIUs are Rev L, they will get power for the updating process throujjgh the USB cable; if not, you'll need a 12-18-volt power supply feeding into the AUX jack.  I also carry a clamp to hold the TIU button down while it updates.

Job is not complicated.  Don't be scared.  Have new batteries in the remote.  When you run the Loader program, and select what you want to do, detailed inctructions come up on screen.  Follow them precisely in the order given.

If you'll be at York & attend the DCS users meeting on Wed eve, I'll be glad to show you how & run you through the process on your devices.

The 50-1032 cable is for interconnecting DCS and LIonel systems; it is not used in the updating process.

(Edited to add a close parenthesis and change "to" to "you".)

I have a clamp for the remote updates as well, and I also stick a small piece of adhesive backed rubber onto the power button so the clamp will positively turn on the remote.

If at any time you release the power button during the 4-6 minute update, the update will fail and you have to start over.  You have no idea how long 4 minutes is until you're sitting there holding down a little button for the whole time!

Berg,

I know many guys like to update their own DCS equipment, however I like somebody who does this all the time, to work with mine.  I do everything else with my layout, however I like Guns or GGG to do my DCS updates, no mistakes in this manner. So when I have something else like an ERR being added to a Tin Plate engine & Tender, I simply send the TIU with it, for an update.

As a matter of fact Guns has one of my DCS units right now.  Both these guys are great at doing their jobs, and besides that my Apple would need a Windows add on, to accomplish the TIU updates, and that is probably never going to happen.

Berg, in another thread within last few days I recommended becoming familiar with the loader program as a way to save contents of the remote to restore it if some problem arises.  I have found this to be a valuable asset.  You will also want it to download sound files to locos.  Hookup for these functions are similar.
