There are some Miller signs where you have to paint out some of the EL so it doesn't light up, if you want the sign to look right (example: there's a sign that says "CAFE" and you have to paint the legs that connect all the letters together). The instructions recommend enamel paint, and specifically say if you use water based paint, to be certain its completely dry before powering up the sign. I have not tried to coat an entire sign before, perhaps either a call or email to Miller would yield a more specific answer.

Thanks for the input. They are pricey, but electronic works of art. I love my Westinghouse sign in particular. Maybe I’ll let well enough alone. I’ll email Chris. I just want to tone down the gloss. Maybe a fine dusting of acrylic dull coat.

a little braggadosia: that sign was the result of my research working with Chris to get it made!  Both my parents and my sister were Westinghouse employees and when Chris announced that he wasn't going to make it, after saying they would, because of lack of information, I did research, gave it to Chris, and you see the result!!!
