Last month on our drive to Florida, Dotty and I stopped in New Jersey to visit with our friend LocoLawyer. Erol is a great host and first shower us his layout. He then took us a few minutes from his home to the Whippany Railway Museum. The Museum was very impressive and I thought I would share a few pictures with the members.























Hobos who rode the Northwestern Pacific rails were cheeky! Bernice Payne, a former NWP yard clerk in Santa Rosa, California, walked the tracks with her dog when recording car numbers. She felt she needed protection from the different knights of the road, who could be depended upon for a wisecrack. “They always had something to say. I’d lost weight. Or I’d gained weight. This week our club was able to set up the tables for our new modular layout using Fastrack generously donated by Forum members Lee Willis and Ricomon (Rick Wells).
Our first layout uses conventionally constructed 4' tables with three main ballasted lines of ScaleTrax & Gargraves. These still have many kinks and quirks that plague us at each set up so we decided to drastically simplify the operation. We still plan to use the larger one for area train shows and bigger venues but will focus mainly on area nursing homes and the like.
Here is the initial laying of the new track.


Newcomer Dale Shore (seated in foreground on left) picked up an amazing bargain at a local flea market recently including the rolling stock pictured above, 4 2400 silver passenger cars, a ZW, some layout accessories, as well as this nice set of 2356 Southerns and a 675 steamer. Two big tubs of good PW Lionel for under $300.
They are still out there....
For the 1st time in many years, I've welcomed a new railroad to the layout. The Western Maryland. For motive power - and being budget minded - I turned to Williams by Bachmann:

Alco FA's in 'Circus' paint. I know the WM had FA2's and not FA1's but these units from Williams look sharp and are nicely detailed. Of course, they're strong, smooth runners too.



Next some EMD F3's in 'Fireball' paint. These new F3's from Williams are also nicely done and run very well. The TB II sounds on this particular locomotive sound just a bit better than other TB II's I've heard.



Both of these A-A sets feature short couplers that make the gap between locomotives just about exactly right - something the 'big' manufacturers seem to struggle with.

For my 1st WM caboose I turned to the new NE cabooses from Lionel.
You can literally count the rivets on this one! Lionel did a really nice job on these.


Future plans include Nathan M5's for the locos and a 'Circus' paint caboose.
Well, there was an estate sale on the next block from me and the ad said there were trains. Of course I found a couple things.

A 1688 torpedo from the 30's. Just needed a good cleaning and lube and it's running great (ran fine before the cleanup too). We also managed to find the matching tender for it. My brother and I are going to try to get the matching freight cars for the set tomorrow morning. We got the engine and tender for $65 total (yes, they don't realize that the engine goes with the tender. 15 for the tender, 50 for the "engine car" as they called it) My brother paid for the engine, I chipped in for the tender Big Grin. I'm still mostly broke from my GG1 purchase a couple weeks ago. I can't wait to see it running under the tree next year. Looks great on my postwar layout.



I also found something for myself.
A Lionel 2472 N5 sheetmetal caboose from 1946-47. I paid $15. I have three PRR engines and no PRR cabooses, so I had to have it. They had a porthole caboose too, but it wasn't in as nice of shape so I left it.

Hi Jake! Your 1688 is a nice find. Glad you have one. Now you'll need to find the black version & the 1668 version of the famous pennsy torpedo Smile Big Grin You just cannot have one. Wink Have fun with the 1688. They are fine running engines. Take Care.

hey jake! thats the freight set that went with it up above, i have the black 1668 with whistle tender,
