The Erie Limited excursion crossing the Genesee  River gorge  at Portage in Lechworth State Park

DSC_0871

Letchworth won USA Today's Reader's Choice competition as the best state park in the United States.
The former Erie RR bridge, now Norfolk Southern, replaced a 1851 wood bridge that burned in 1875. The present bridge was originally designed for South Africa but was diverted to the Erie Instead
A new bridge is scheduled to be built just to the south of this one.

Pictures from East terminal, Glacier National Park.  Amtrak, Empire Builder was to arrive 11 AM.

East Glacier Railroad Station.

Part of the James J. Hill, Great Northern Railroad design of Glacier National Park was the two mountain-top chalets.  Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet, both were hike-in only resorts with limited provisions.    Granite Park can be accessed from the Loop trail, a steep 4 mile climb. Also from Logan Pass an 8 mile trek across the mountain slopes.    Slideshow of the hike to Granite Park Chalet.

Great Northern mascot.

And a marmot or two.
